Actions speak louder than words

This known phrase came to me 2 weeks ago when I met with some Executives and Managers to ask their views on leadership qualities and training. In fact everyone had been on training courses and workshops on the subject and was very knowledgeable. The biggest problem seemed to lie in implementing what had been learned .

Line Managers clearly identified a gap between daily actions and the theory and agreed that regular coaching sessions after a training seminar make all the difference. Often people are very motivated after training sessions, but when the daily routine takes over, what has been learned is soon forgotten. Regular coaching sessions helps employees stay on tract and intergrate the new insights and skills more easily and effectively long term.

We further agreed that the leaders that moved and inspired us most were the ones that acted in line with what they were talking about. In fact from the first moment of contact their style is apparent. After meetings, perhaps we soon forget the detail of their words, but their behavior, their actions stay with us, actions speak louder than words.

Speaking with so many different Managers and Leaders also moved me to look at my own actions once again and I realized how important it is for me to 'walk my talk'. I realized that when I am at my best I also open the door for the people around me to be at their best. So I asked myself what does it take for me to be at my best? Here is what I came up with:

I feel I am at my best:

When I am authentic
• When I am motivated by caring rather than by fear
• When I am passionate and focused about what I do
• When I am well prepared and clear about my intention

This has been a valuable lesson I re-learned and which helped me to re-commit myself to ‘walk my talk’ and add some daily self-coaching tools to help me stay on track.

Enjoy,

Christiane Pohl

My nephew is 13 months and absolutely loves is Baby Einstein DVDs. I can't speak for other enfants or caregivers, but I know for a fact through these DVDs he was able to learn new words and actions. I think for Disney its a rebranding issue. I believe the current consumers of these videos will probably continue to watch them. And I have to say a lot of it is word of mouth, before he was born I knew nothing about this stuff, but now I probably know far too much and its all because of the information I've been given.

Some of the English words found a very respected place in our life and now have verbs.

Re: How many nationalities are on the forum? - Hey, Kev: I call myself Canadian ... but I can't speak French! :-[ My oldest granddaughter just started Play School (I think that's what they call it) and she is enrolled in the French Immersion class. That is great! I think it is valuable to be able to speak more than one language, and I think it also helps to stretch the mind and exercise the brain. GT :-]
