Creating a Vision
Creating a Vision
How often do we spend weeks, months or years doing things we don’t enjoy doing, staying in jobs that don’t fulfil us or tolerating relationships that no longer work? How often have you felt stuck, frustrated, confused or stressed because you do what you feel you should do INSTEAD of what you really want to do? And then of course the key question is:
What is it that you really want to do? In business or in everyday life people often don’t really know. And if you do know and you are not doing it yet you may want some help or inspiration on how to actually get started.
Now at this point let me stress one thing: This is not about postponing happiness into the future. Creating and expressing your vision will help you embrace the NOW, enjoy the MOMENT and seize the DAY. Your vision will be your REFERENCE POINT, your DESTINATION and once you have a destination you can decide which road to take and which path to walk.
Let me give you a couple of more questions to start you off.
A few weeks ago I was in Miami and gave a talk/workshop on creating a vision. Most of the participants were emerging leaders of the arts and one of the questions during the workshop was:
What would you be or do if you knew you couldn’t fail?”
The next question would be:
What is keeping you from being or doing it?”
Now take some time TODAY and answer those questions yourself:
What do I really want?
What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?
What is keeping me from being or doing it?
Have fun with them and let your imagination run wild. Be exuberant and don’t worry about the HOW at this stage.
Let me help you by giving you an example from my own life:
When my business coach asked me “What do you really want to do?’’ my first reply was “I don’t really know”. She told me to look again and I took some time and became very still. And suddenly there it was: a picture of myself emerged, talking in front of hundreds of people on a stage in a big venue. WOW!
In my vision I spoke with passion and inspiration. What was the subject of my talk? How to lead with vision for creating a better life and a better environment in the work place. “Is that what you would do if you knew you couldn’t fail?” My answer was “Yes”. “So what is keeping you from doing it?” “Fear, and the fact that until this moment I didn’t know that this is what I really want to do”.
And this was the beginning. I had my REFERENCE POINT. There were many more questions to answer, most of them starting with When, How, What. But now I had a reference point. I sat down, put pen to paper and filled out the details of my vision as they came up. It seemed crazy at times because I had no idea of how to be a brilliant speaker or where to find my audience. But in time opportunities came up, people asked me to give talks, others offered training on how to be a better speaker and my vision was on it’s way to becoming reality.
How? Once I knew where I wanted to go I was able to create the road map of how to get there. I knew it would take time, but I started to make decisions that would facilitate my new path. In time I closed my body therapy practice, and started giving workshops and coaching other leaders to find their own path. I knew from experience:
Energy follows Thought. The more thought we give to something, the more energy and nourishment we give to that direction, the more likely we are to create what we want. The bigger the vision, the bigger the outcome.

Making decisions about which road to take, which way to turn or which path to walk are as important in business as they are in everyday life. On the other hand, the consequences of not making those decisions can even be worse.
