Discovering the Entrepreneurial Spirit within you
Have you ever asked yourself if
you have what it take to become an entrepreneur? What skills are needed?
I have been intrigued by those questions for some time and finally was
curious enough to travel all the way to California to find some answers.
There were 10 of us and for 2 and a half days we participated in a
process called ‘The Dreaming Room’ - how to awaken the Entrepreneurial Spirit within –
and believe me it was quite a task; but I learned something remarkable; I
learned that the entrepreneurial spirit lives within me and also within
you and you and you.
The ‘Dreaming Room’ process was created and facilitated by Michael Gerber, who is
considered by many to be the most innovative small business guru of the
last 30 years. I have enjoyed Michael’s straight forward approach,
clarity, focus and passion for some time and loved working with him.
I would like to share with you some of my key insights from those days.
They are not just keys for being an entrepreneur, but also for living
life to the fullest.
1. Every
entrepreneur does one thing. He takes an ordinary thing and does it in
an extraordinary way.
Just really let that sink
in for a moment – To do something Ordinary
in an Extraordinary way; To do it better
then anyone else, to have more imagination than everyone else, and to
dream bigger then anyone else.
2. Imagination is more important than
knowledge! If you figure out what you are
here to do then you will also figure out how to do it.
Forget for a moment about your skills and what you know how to do
already. Start dreaming about a great result. A great result you would
like to create. Start asking yourself 'If I had a dream, what would it
be?'
Find a dream in your own life story or your pain.
3. Think about one thing in your demographic area that is missing or not
working well. Start to imagine ways to do it better.
4. Dig
to the root of the problem, investigate who is already doing something
to solve it. Identify how it could be done better.
5. Think big – start small, step by step.
6. Your
accountability is to take people beyond where they are, to touch their
lives.
7. Think
of yourself as an Ambassador for what you stand for. You are a teacher
for your customers, staff, colleagues, suppliers.
8. Ask
yourself what can be done and how can it be done for someone that wants
it done. What is the one thing that you feel inspired to do?
Those are just 8 points to get you started on finding your own
dream. It is important not to be limited by what you already know how to
do. Go about finding your dream with an open mind, have fun with it, be
curious about what comes up. The process alone is fascinating.
Just one additional point – once a dream has emerged you may find it
difficult to ignore it. I hope you do. I hope that you will feel
compelled to act and to free the Entrepreneurial Spirit that has been
living all along inside you.
Then you may need additional help. Michael
Gerber has written a number of books on
the essential disciplines for building a successful business. I
recommend that you read them. You may want to consider one of the E-myth books. His latest book "The Most Successful Small Business in the World" (... and yes you can start with this one)
is a passionate call for action!
With my best wishes for
your success,
Christiane Pohl
