Do women have different leadership qualities than men?

Guest post by: Christiane Pohl

Article Overview: Research is not conclusive on the subject. Traditionally however, leadership is broken down into archetypes that you may identify with: it is said that male leadership qualities are those that focus on getting things done, taking charge and acting systematically, while female leadership qualities are those that focus on creating conditions for life. How can women contribute?

Do women have different leadership qualities than men?

Many men and women combine both, male and female leadership qualities, the male archetype is domineering in most cultures and seems to prove less and less sufficient for solving our modern day challenges. Has the time come to create a new leadership model and what would that model look like?

'It’s time for the women to gather.' said Dr. Margaret Wheatley writer, organizational consultant and president emeritus of The Berkana Institute, a global charitable leadership foundation. “It’s time for the women to save the world. It’s as serious as that.” With those words, Wheatley opened her keynote at the Women’s Leadership Institute held at Mount Mary College WI in October.

'It’s a time when women’s leadership is the last hope. We have to pull ourselves out of this mess.' The world’s future depends upon us claiming the leadership that we know works.

One sign of problems is that we’re not taking care of our children, nor of the women who are their caretakers. 'We’re not paying attention to our children and our mothers,' noted Wheatley. 'What species is so stupid as not to care about its children?'

Everyone is so focused on his/her own issues that no one is paying attention to what’s actually going on in the world. The longer that fear and busyness distract us, the faster we come to extinguishing ourselves. 'There’s no more time left.' she said. 'We cannot continue to work in the way we’re going and expect any future whatsoever.'

Command and control leadership assumes you can tell people what to do and they’ll do it. 'Everything alive reacts, but never obeys,' said Wheatley. 'But this leadership model pretends it isn’t so.' When used in high-risk situations, the command/control model prevents higher-ordered thinking that would ultimately lower the risk.

When threatened with a crisis, the traditional response is fight or flight. But women faculty at UCLA noticed something different:

Whenever some type of crisis hit the department, the male faculty hid in their offices while the women gathered in the kitchen.

So the women's faculty looked for studies to explain this phenomenon. What they discovered was that during a crisis, women didn’t actually fight or flee, but instead gathered together to take care of the children.

If the male model is command and control, the female model can be described as "tend and befriend".'

In my opinion Margaret Wheatley’s observations are very valid.

We need to create leadership models that are all inclusive. Models that help us keep in mind how much everything and everyone is interconnected. We need to invite people to contribute, to get involved and share their ideas and solutions with us. We need to foster trust and a environment that invites people to speak up.

We need to develop models that are not based on wanting to control because of our fear of uncertainty, but that thrive on the fact that as leaders we don’t have all the answers.

Every aspect of living, working and leading revolves around relationships; no one exists independently of his/her relationships. And to truly be in a relationship involves becoming comfortable with confusion, uncertainty and insecurity.

As long as we want to control outcomes and people relationship cannot truly develop.

Poor qualities = no franchise! Poor qualities = no franchise! - Most franchises screen their potential franchisees very well (and if they don't, then they aren't a good franchise). Chances are if anyone held even some of the qualities you outlined here, they would not be granted a franchise. Just because someone has the cash to purchase one, doesn't mean they will get one. And Nana- you are so right, no one should be in any type of business if they hold those qualities!
Why women's networking associations fail Why women's networking associations fail - I've been involved in a lot of women's networking associations in leadership positions and have found that most of them are failing or struggling. WHy? Because no matter how good the idea, most fail to recognize that 1) volunteer run associations are essentially trying to herd cats. most volunteers have great intentions and very little work ethic when it comes to getting things done. 2) women, especially those who are new in business, forget that men still run the world, so by limiting their exposure to only women's groups, they lose out on all the other great resources and ideas available to them. 3) women naturally become social creatures. while some bits of business actually go around, most networking groups become social clubs by virtue of the way women interact with each other. These are just some of the reasons. I'd like to hear what other women think... TheRainmaker
Re: Differences between men and women entrepreneurs Re: Differences between men and women entrepreneurs - Hi Jude, I looked at your website. It looks great and I agree with what you say! I think you have a great concept that will really get women's attention. I hope it helps a lot of women. I wanted to read your article, but I couldn't find a way to read it without signing up for your services. I did like what you wrote about women on your home page though! I too, have noticed women tend to be the hardest on themselves. I think most of us have heard that women usually dress for women, not men. I remember hearing about a study that said women usually scan their competition in the form of other women when they enter a room. They said most women want to know that they are the best woman in the room. That study was on a social scale, but it's still interesting to consider how it might translate to business. Hmmm... just who are women trying to impress anyway? We don't need to compete! If we just learned to accept our own unique talents and chose to see them as great assets, there's no need to impress anyone! When I finally learned this truth and took it to heart, I was freed up to really grow forward! Wishing you all the best! Tami
What makes a good sales rep? What makes a good sales rep? - I read about a great salesman and poor salesman who were sent to a village where people could not afford to buy a new shoe. The poor salesman did not believe anyone could buy new brand shoe so he could not sell in the poor village. But this great salesman believed that at least there would be a person who would be interested in using the new shoe for the first time in his or her life. That believe made him to sell more new shoes in the village than the other person who went back to the city because of his believe. So, one of the qualities sales representative can have is to believe in himself and the products is representing. I will share more of the qualities in the next posts.
Male vs female networking Male vs female networking - [quote:2zrnzg30]I could imagine at a higher level that Executives could possibly treat women different to men.[/quote:2zrnzg30] I wonder if there's an age difference between how men and women react. Men over the age of 40 are used to dealing with their "old boy network" I think, whereas younger guys have more experience dealing with women of power in the work place. And then there's women - those over 40 no how much effort was put into getting equal treatment, whereas women under 40 don't appreciate what had gone before. That's an over-generalization, I suppose, but I wonder if its true?
