Effective Leadership - What is the secret?

Effective leadership does not come from the mere knowledge about what successful leaders do; or from trying to copy the characteristics or styles of noteworthy leaders; or from trying to remember and follow the steps, tips, or techniques from books on leadership. And it certainly does not come from merely being in a position of authority or having decision rights.

So what does it take to be an effective leader?

It's a question that often comes up in my coaching sessions with professionals in a variety of Management positions. My experiences over the years have let me to believe that effective leadership is linked to being natural and comfortable in ones own skin. It is also linked to being curious, creative and caring. And that translates into being open to change and also to experimenting with what works and what does not. A good level of 'know thyself' is a bonus.

Given my own experiences with effective leadership I rejoiced when reading the following HBS (Harvard Business Schools) article about a new leadership development course that has been created by a team of professors.

HBS professor and authors Werner Erhard, Michael C. Jensen, Steve Zaffron, and Kari L. Granger developed a course with a difference. They say:

'The intention of this course is to leave the participants actually being leaders and exercising leadership as their natural self-expression.

Rather than teaching 'leadership strategies' or being a 'how to guide', we allow participants to create for themselves an enabling and empowering context that provides the opportunity of being a and acting as a leader as one's natural self-expression. And we provide participants the opportunity to become aware of and deal with their personal obstacles.

This course is based on the proposition that:

1. Given the right context for leader and leadership, everyone has the capacity to be a leader, and

2. There are certain personal obstacles that must be dealt with in order to actualize that capacity.

The promise of this course is

While you will not necessarily have all of the experience and knowledge you need to be a truly extraordinary leader, you will have experienced whatever personal transformation is required for you to be a leader and what it takes to exercise leadership effectively.'

That is the secret: Transformation!

Learning what it takes for you to feel and act like a leader. Becoming aware of which Personal Obstacles you need to overcome. Finding your own style of being a leader, a style that is an expression of who you are and what you stand for.

With my best wishes for your success,

Christiane Pohl

Re: How Much Of Ourselves Should We Give Away...? Re: How Much Of Ourselves Should We Give Away...? - what a great topic david start here, it reminds me of a movie i watched resently called KUNFU PANDA. The movie is all about keeping secret. there were two secret kept: the secret of dragon scroll and secret of cooking, later the secret was revealed which was no secret kept. the reason am relating this movie with the topic is that, you can give out 90% for free and hold on to 10% secret which will make you have more customer and traffic. I know some marketers both the internet and offline that will give you 100% product for free but whenever they want to sell to you the little one you will be glad to respond because of their gesture. What I would like to say is that giving out most of the product is a great marketing strategy to win more buyers to your future products.
Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
Re: Can you read body language and convert it into a sale? Re: Can you read body language and convert it into a sale? - [quote="Kevin":2b3i4dqy] So what is your husband's secret? Can you give a specific example of what he does in order to win over customers?[/quote:2b3i4dqy] I don't know his secret, he was born this way, and has 40 years of training. He tried to teach me and coaching me, giving me opening lines, and we did illustrations of real conversation. No luck. He knows how to talk to people, and how to read them, even if it's over the phone, he knows exactly what to say and how to say it, he always tells me "you shouldn't say this, you should say it like this". I am amazed every time.
Trade secrets Trade secrets - Hi BizLoanz4u, I think I've only had a non-disclosure agreement with my web designer and I've never even felt the need to have one with my business coach when we were discussing my ideas. In fact, I knew that if he talked about my business with other people, it'd probably be in my best interests. When people talk about your idea, it helps provide free exposure and possibily even attracts others to get involved with your business. I believe that a person could probably have the most original idea, then write up the best business plan and even post it on the web or leave it on a college campus library table and the following would hold true: 1.) The idea or trade secret probably isn't original or a secret. 2.) The majority of people who stumble upon the "confidential" business plan would NOT act on it. 3.) The few who dare to take the risk and implement the idea would fail. 4.) And there's probably a better chance of winning the lottery or getting attacked by a shark or hit by lightning than for a person to find your idea/trade secret and turn it into a successful business.
