How to avoid stress and suffering by retraining your Brain

How to avoid stress and suffering by retraining your Brain

The fundamental desire of every person is to be free from stress and from suffering.

There are two types of stress and suffering, that of the body by having pain, illness etc….and that of the mind which longs for inner peace and stillness.

Stress and Suffering therefore are connected with perceiving something as painful. And it is the pain, which slows down the healing process, on the physical as well as on the psychological level. Pain keeps your system from relaxing and changes the way your immune system works.

Therefore the first and most important step in reducing stress and suffering is reducing pain.

The question is how?

Pain keeps us form relaxing but at the same time not being relaxed increases the stress and pain. One way to initiate change is through the breath. By changing the way we breathe we can increase relaxation and change the way our body, mind and emotions interact.

At the same time when we feel relaxed or when we sleep or meditate our breathing changes automatically.

Meditating - simply sitting still with your eyes closed for a period of 20 minutes - changes the way your brain works; brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. In other words you feel calmer, more relaxed and happier than before and experience less stress.

What is the function of the right side of the brain cortex?

Looking at neurology, research and the history of the brain you will find that the right side of the brain is responsible for ‘orientation’. It is not just to do with orientation, but also with the ‘I’ sense, meaning the self. Everyone who has practiced meditation will know that one of the changes you experience when meditating is losing the sense of your body, the sense of your surroundings and also of the ‘I’ and after about 45 minutes people will say that they have a feeling of ‘oneness’. Loosing the sense of the ‘I’ also means that there is no sense of the past, the future or of having any problems.

What does that mean in relation to stress?

It means something very important. Whenever people are in that state of meditation one can see in a PET scan a change in the brain activity after 20 minutes and again after 40 minutes. When at that moment people were asked how they felt their answer was that they felt good - whatever problems they had were gone.

The only problem was that they could not maintain that state for long after the meditation

Is there then a way that this state can be reached and maintained in your every day, busy life?
Time Therapy says yes, there is a way; and this way is what we call ‘Modern Mediation’.

Manuel Schoch, the founder of Time Therapy realized that it ‘was possible to create a state like we described above, whereby most of your problems could be solved – not because you have to work with them or understand them but simply because when you are in that state, these problems are not present.

On a practical level that means that if I feel stressed, angry, frustrated or overwhelmed, I can enter that meditative state and these feelings no longer affect me in the same way and my stress is reduced.

What then is modern meditation and how does it work?

When practicing modern meditation you are retraining your brain to look at things differently by shifting your focus. The brain is an instrument of great flexibility, just like a muscle and it can be developed, shaped, trained.

All you need to do is practice. It is the same process as going o the gym. Your muscles, your body will not change if you do not work out on a regular basis. The same principle applies to everything in life, including re-training the brain – practice is key.

Take a moment and look around you. What do you see? What do you focus on? What are you aware off?

For thousands of years our brain, our mind is trained to focus on what it sees, hears, feels because this is essential to our survival. We need to know what is happening around us in order to stay out of danger and not get into trouble. Now on a practical level this is very important.
However, there is another way of looking at what is around us, and that way involves focusing on SPACE; in fact 90 % of our body, mind, world, universe is Space. Space is that which makes living possible. Space is what makes breathing possible.

In Modern Meditation you practice focusing on the GAP, on the Space that exists between everything.
Not just 20 minutes daily with your eyes closed, but also throughout the day, even with your eyes open.

Start by observing the gap between your in and out breath and between your thoughts every moment of the day. Train your brain to focus on space and both physical and psychological stress and suffering will decrease and your ability to choose instead of react will increase considerably.

More space, more relaxation, more energy, more creativity, more clarity, more success

yours sincerely,

Christiane Pohl
