Less Stress, More Profit - the Value of Corporate Stress Management Training

Less Stress, More Profit - the Value of Corporate Stress Management Training

‘The average direct cost of absenteeism is $3,550 per employee per year ‘

‘Workplace stress is estimated to cause 19% of absenteeism’

Research confirms that reducing stress in the workplace saves you money, increases productivity, enhances loyalty, and makes your company healthier and more profitable.

How to get there?

Make Stress Management part of your Training and Development Program for new and existing employees.

Over the last 20 years I have been observing and helping people reduce stress in their lives and the workplace. The ‘Less Stress, More Life' workshop is the result of those experiences and combines easy to learn breathing and meditation techniques with powerful insights on how to adopt stress reducing practices and attitudes that will help you and your team manage easier, relate better, generate more business and have a life.

PART 1: Some thought provoking statistics:

USA - Harvard researchers estimate that 60-90% of doctor's visits are caused by stress. Stress is linked to the following illnesses: heart attacks, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, chronic pain, insomnia, allergies, headache, backache, various skins disorders, cancer, accidents, suicide, depression, immune system weakness, decreases in the number and function of white blood cells.
Workplace stress is estimated to cause:

19% of absenteeism’
40% of turnover (American Institute of Stress)
55% of EAP programs (helping Employees deal with personal problems)
60% of workplace accidents
30% of short and long-term disability

Canada - Watson Wyatt Canadian Staying @ Work Survey

- The average direct cost of absenteeism is $3,550 per employee per year
- In 2008 the annual cost to Canadian companies due to stress-related disorders is $12 billion
- Stress accounts for $26 billion in medical and disability payments and $95 billion in lost productivity per year

Great Britain -

- Absenteeism costs the UK £11.6bn a year,published by BUPA, healthinfo@bupa.com, April 2008

- Workers who must take time off work because of stress, anxiety, or a related disorder will be off the job for about 20 days - Bureau of Labor Statistics

- The 2006/07 survey of Self-reported Work-related Illness (SWI06/07) prevalence estimate indicated that around 530 000 individuals in Britain believed in 2006/07 that they were experiencing work-related stress at a level that was making them ill.

France – Étienne Lecomte, Institute for Economic and Social Research (IRES) -2008

- Among the work-related psychosocial risks, stress is the most widespread and constitutes a major challenge for health at work, and thus for public health.

Yet reducing stress on a daily basis is easy with the right tools. The most effective and simple way is through the breath. Stress affects the way we breathe and by changing our breathing we can affect our stress level.

Part 2: Clinical Research on Benefits of Meditation and breathing

Hundreds of studies have been conducted on meditation and its beneficial effects on heart disease, cholesterol, high blood pressure, insomnia, chronic pain, cancer, and immunity. Studies have also shown significant improvements in mental health, memory, concentration, productivity, increase of self-knowledge and being less bothered by little things, feeling happier and more successful.

The brain waves of meditators show why they're healthier. Neuroscientists have found that meditators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex—brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. In other words, they were calmer and happier than before.
Psychology Today, April 24, 2003, Article ID: 2716

Apple Computer’s offices in California have a meditation room and employees are actually given a half hour a day on company time to meditate or pray, as they find it improves productivity and creativity. 2004 Corinne McLaughlin

A research project by Prof. Richard Davidson at the University of Wisconsin at Pomega, a biotechnology company that had a very high-stress workplace, found a meditation training produced astonishing results in reducing stress and generating positive feelings. 2004 Corinne McLaughlin

"Both the Harvard Business School and Europe's leading business school, INSEAD, have concluded, from research, that the two most effective business tools for twenty-first century executives are meditation and intuition."

Part 3: Add value to your company by making Stress Management part of your Training and Development Program

The benefits of Stress management and successful stress reduction have been documented for many years, but few companies have taken steps to make stress management training part of their employee development program. It is time to change that and treat stress management as a way to increase productivity, employee loyalty and health, customer satisfaction and profit.

Here is how. Here are some of the key benefits:

• Identifying people’s roots of stress is the first step to putting aside unnecessary fears and worries and to enhancing creativity and productivity. Some people are stressed by deadlines, others by daily routines, still others by completely different issues.

• Gaining insights on how to better use our mind, emotions and reactions increases the ability to act from inner strength and respond with clarity and insight. Less internal bickering and fruitless meetings, more focus on solutions and results.

• Practicing simple breathing techniques aids concentration, focus, health and ultimately success while reducing the costs of stress related disorders

• Becoming aware of the connections between the way we feel, think and act, helps in dealing more effectively with difficult people and situations improving customer satisfaction and the atmosphere at the work place.

In this day and age where time is money and the pace of every day life is becoming faster and faster, finding new ways of dealing with stress is the key to increasing profit and success and to staying healthy and happy in the process.

After all 'Life is 10% what happens to us, and 90% how we react to it.'

If you would like to gain some first hand experience of how simple breathing techniques and coaching tools can help you live with less stress then contact me today.
'Less Stress, More Life' program can be taught and run as a workshop or retreat.

yours sincerely,

Christiane Pohl
