When 'LESS IS BEST'

When 'LESS IS BEST'

This was our motto when I first trained as a Bowen therapist. 'Less is best' then referred to the number of moves we made when treating a client who was in pain. It seemed a strange concept to us at first, clients and therapists alike, we had all been conditioned to do more… more…. more. Through the Bowen technique however I learned that when giving space and time to the body for relaxation, healing comes naturally.

And soon I realized that relaxation and doing less is the key to achieving more in work and life and brings more joy and balance at the same time. It is not just what we do, but how we feel while doing it that counts in the end.

So in time my philosophy became: Identify and use what enriches your life and let go of excess baggage (concepts. ideas, things, people) that weighs you down; enjoy the journey and travel light.

The most common problem many people I work with have, is finding a satisfactory balance between their work and their free time. They seem constantly 'on the run', busy with working and often with accumulating things. Doing more and more they end up feeling that they achieve less and less. There never seems to be enough time. Does that sound familiar to you?

I used to feel exactly like this until I realized that there is 'a time to act and a time to reflect' and that acting less and reflecting more at the end works Best to achieve a balance and reduce stress.

So here are 5 steps that you can take daily to help you do less while achieving more. Celebrating a Life of Less is Best:

* Start the day by spending 15 minutes being still and reflecting on what you want to achieve that day; how you want to feel and how you want to act - make notes if you like, script it.

* Then note down what has priority, what is most important to get done.

* Now reflect on what can be delegated to others and what you have to do yourself. Here you need to think BIG - there is always the tendency to do too much yourself or to get drawn in by others into doing things you did not plan to be involved in. If others asked you for answers or assistance, reflect on their request a few minutes before committing yourself- how important is it, can they solve it themselves, can someone else help them? (create some space, give yourself some time to reply, don't just re-act)

* Identify reoccurring patterns that do not serve your purpose and spend time reflecting on how to let go of those patterns.

* Spend some time at the end of the day and reflect how everything worked; where would you like to still see a difference? Make a few notes, which you can incorporate into the next day's script.

You will soon find that approaching work and life in this way helps you to feel more structured, organized and relaxed and gives more free time.

One more tip: Be objective with your observations instead of being judgmental. Observe what works well and what does not, without beating yourself up, just take some time out to identify what is needed to make it work the way you would like and what to let go off. You may even start in the house, letting go of clothes and other stuff that you no longer use.

If you realise that there are areas, issues or patterns where you struggle to make that shift you are looking for then don't hesititate to contact me. I'll be happy to help you move on.

Enjoy!

Christiane
