Having a Personal Vision is the first step in creating a new you. However a vision is just that, an idea or dream. It is important to dream. But dreaming will not make it happen. Only by having powerful action goals can you construct an effective plan and achieve your vision.
Goals are the tools that you will use to build a new life. Like an architect you have created a vision. But an architect does not build a house. It takes hammers, saws, nails, wood and concrete and a step by step plan to construct the house. Your goals become the tools that will make your vision a realty.
Creating goals, writing them down and taking the action steps to accomplish them is critical to your self-improvement. Studies have shown that when we write down our goals we are more likely to accomplish them. People who have written goals are much more successful then those who do not have written goals.
Just to prove how important it is to have written goals a study was done years ago on the 1954 Harvard University graduating class. The study tracked these graduates over several decades. Now you would think anyone who graduated from a prestigious university like Harvard would automatically be successful. However what they found out was those who had written specific goals were much more successful than those who did not have written goals. A similar study was done on salespeople and the results were that those with goals earn three times the income, had more free time and were happier than those without goals.
So if you are serious about changing your life you need to have a set of specific goals, these goals need to be written down and reviewed daily. Each goal will have a set of detailed specific action steps that you will take. The action steps will put you on the right path to achieving your goals.
Finding the time and making a commitment to change your life will require discipline and courage. You can do it by applying the ideas and guideline in this book. The most important step is to begin and we begin by writing down specific goals and action steps that will motivate and move you forward.
Crafting Powerful Goals: Below are the steps to crafting powerful goals.
1. Review your self assessment test. Decide which area you want to tackle first. (Note: I strongly suggest you pick one of the areas from the back wheel first).
2. Picture yourself accomplishing the goal. Imagine how you will look in that new swimsuit after you lose 10 pounds.
3. Make your goals realistic, but still a challenge. Saying that you are going to be a millionaire at 40 and you are already 39 may be unattainable. But setting aside money each paycheck for savings and investing is certainly possible.
4. Set a time table to accomplish the goal.
5. Write the goal down and put it some place where you will see it everyday. Example: "By July I will lose 10 pounds."
After writing down your goal/goals it is time to develop "Action Steps" that will compel you to accomplish your goal.
Action Steps are critical to your success. Think of Action Steps as the building blocks or the rungs on a ladder leading toward your goals. These action steps are the small daily things you do each and everyday. Eventually they become habits for success. For example let's use this goal: "By July I will lose 10 pounds."
Some Action Steps could be:
1. Throw out or give away all the junk food I have stored in the house.
2. Schedule a doctors appointment.
3. Join a health club.
4. Sign up for weight watchers.
5. Buy a book on dieting/exercising.
6. Start walking 20 min a day.
7. Pack a salad for lunch instead of eating at a fast food restaurant.
8. Get a friend to diet with me.
I think you get the picture. By writing down these Action Steps and committing yourself to doing one a day, you will start working towards your goal of losing weight.
Work on only 1 or 2 goals at a time. Don't overwhelm yourself or stressing yourself out by trying to do too much. Celebrate each small accomplishment, make it fun. Enjoy the ride.
Now is also a great time to start writing in a journal. You can do this on your computer, but I found it is much more powerful to hand write your goals, action steps, ideas, thoughts in a notebook. There is something about the physical act of writing words on paper that makes it more meaningful.
Take the time to really think about your goals and action plans. Follow the suggested steps, write them in a journal and daily review your progress.
