Crafting Powerful Goals
1. Pick the thing you most want to accomplish. For example - lose weight.
2. Picture yourself accomplishing the goal. Imagine how you will look in that new swimsuit after you lose 10 pounds.
3. Make your goals realistic, but still a challenge. Saying that you are going to be a millionaire at 40 and you are already 39 may be unattainable. But setting aside money each paycheck for savings and investing is certainly possible.
4. Set a time table to accomplish the goal.
5. Write the goal down and put it some place where you will see it everyday.
Example: "By July I will lose 10 pounds."
After writing down your goal/goals it is time to develop "Action Steps" that will compel you to accomplish your goal.
Action Steps are critical to your success. Think of Action Steps as the building blocks or the rungs on a ladder leading toward your goals. These action steps are the small daily things you do each and everyday. Eventually they become habits for success.
For example let's use this goal: "By July I will lose 10 pounds."
Some Action Steps could be:
1. Throw out or give away all the junk food I have stored in the house.
2. Schedule a doctors appointment.
3. Join a health club.
4. Sign up for weight watchers.
5. Buy a book on dieting/exercising.
6. Start walking 20 min a day.
7. Pack a salad for lunch instead of eating at a fast food restaurant.
8. Get a friend to diet with me.
I think you get the picture. By writing down these Action Steps and committing yourself to doing one a day, you will start working towards your goal of losing weight.
Work on only 1 or 2 goals at a time. Don't overwhelm yourself or stressing yourself out by trying to do too much. Celebrate each small accomplishment, make it fun. Enjoy the ride.
Now is also a great time to start writing in a journal. You can do this on your computer, but I found it is much more powerful to hand write your goals, action steps, ideas, thoughts in a notebook. There is something about the physical act of writing words on paper that makes it more meaningful.
Take the time to really think about your goals and action plans. Follow the suggested steps, write them in a journal and daily review your progress.
