Team Building Rubbish - By Michael Licenblat

The difference between a gloomy winter’s storm and a beautiful afternoon shower is your perspective.
Your mental perspective determines whether you overcome your challenges and build success or simply lie down, complain, and become stuck in a rut. Having the desire to become
more, achieve more or give more – instead of putting up with what you have - is the key to success.

From the age of ten I spent most of my weekends growing up on the Victoria Market (Melbourne, Australia) helping my father sell clothing on his stall. It was packed full of people who were happy because business was very good at that time.

When Sunday trading began, however, the markets were unable to compete with the larger stores and the market popularity, along with its business, slowed right down. About twenty years later, I returned to the market and saw that some of the people whom I grew up with were still there - in the same stall - but without the happy faces.

"The market is hard" they would say, "not like the old days". When I asked them why they don’t do something different, they just shook their heads and mumbled, "We at least know the market - to learn something new would be too hard - it’s easier to just do this and keep doing what we know".

The thing that struck me the most was the lack of sparkle in their eyes. They were not headed somewhere in life, they were just getting through their days. A person without a spark of passion is like a car without ignition - it can not take you where you really want to go.

Desire is the seed of change

By having the desire to be more, to achieve more, to have more, or to give more, you create the drive to move out of a rut and into a new future.

To follow desire requires taking risks and stepping outside your comfort zone.
The ‘better the devil you know’ attitude keeps you stuck with what you have right now – because it is comfortable, familiar and safe.

You may stay in a job, which you not longer like, because it pays your bills.
You may stay in a relationship, where the love has gone, because it is convenient.
You may stay in a business, which has no future, because it is all that you know.
You may stay in a house, which you do not like, because you don’t take control over your finances.

Your comfort zone can become your prison.
Your prison creates stress.

Face Forward

Get out of your rut by creating fresh desire in your life, relationships, work or business.
Here is a 3 step process:

1. Get clear on what you want
Be specific on how you want your future to look - it is difficult to hit a target that you cannot see.
Set clear short term goals (1, 3, 6, 12 months) and be very clear on what you want to be different in that time frame.

If you are driving a business, apart from just paying the bills, what new targets do you want to reach in your cash flow? Efficiency? Delivery times? Staff engagement?

2. Sit back and complain
What will your future be like if nothing changes from today? If you keep the same whinges, complaints and excuses going, how will your life be in 3 months? 6 months? 12 months? Spend at least 10 minutes indulging in the feeling of being totally stuck for the rest of your life. You need to feel this pain and realise that by staying in your comfort zone you are allowing this to happen.

3. ‘If it is possible…’ approach
Focus on your goals ‘as if’ they were possible to achieve. Put aside your self doubt and negativity. Take a blank piece of paper and write at the top ‘if this goal(s) was possible to achieve, what steps would I need to take?’ Then start writing. Plan your steps as if your goal is possible to reach. Keep in mind these two factors:

a. What do you need to improve in yourself?
Improve your time management? Focus? Discipline? What is your weakness that needs to be addressed? What skills or knowledge do you lack?

If you are driving a business, are you good in sales but poor in client follow-up? Are you good at working in your business, but spend little time working on your business growth?

b. What help is available? Locate mentors in those
areas whom have already created the success you want. Find courses, books, CD’s , or other resources that you can use to educate yourself.
