Laid-off IT workers strike out on their own

The multiple opportunities available to laid-off technology workers who want to work for themselves has been highlighted in a new Computerworld article.

Some IT employees have been using their skills to start their own consulting businesses, while others turn to online employment marketplaces to find freelance and contract jobs.

A new survey by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas found that 8.7 percent of people who lost their jobs in the second quarter of this year had gone into business for themselves.

This proportion compared to 6.4 percent who did so in the first three months of 2009 and 4.3 percent who started their own firm in the second quarter of 2008.

Robert Goodearl, who runs his own software company in Massachusetts, told Computerworld he has noticed that many IT professionals are looking into being their own boss.

"I have seen a lot of interest in people who are considering becoming consultants," he said, adding that some of these individuals are still employed but concerned about job loss.

There are currently 8,192 open jobs listed on oDesk, many of which are in the IT sector.

Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals - I don't have any permanet workers now. I outsourced everything now to freelancers. I have many workers in the past and most them are ambitious which affect my business
Re: How did we Live before Electricity Re: How did we Live before Electricity - Well, in the good old days (i.e. the 1970's), I experienced life without electricity in three ways (excluding camping trips)... 1. My great gran's cottage in Sussex. 2. The miners' strike that brought down the Heath govt. 3. Visiting a couple who refused to have electricity installed in their house and used oil lamps for illumination. Open coal fires were the order of the day. And a lot of chat. In the case of the miners' strike, we stocked up on candles, sat by the fire, cooked on gas, chatted, and went to bed early. Ah, those were the good old days, indeed!
Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals - I think its ok to hire an ambitious person,if he doesnt have a personal goal but understands the company's goal and ready to learn the principles of the company.Ambitious workers are always craving for success but they need to be well supervised because ambitious workers don't need much movitation but must be guided by experienced supervisor.
Re: Unions Ruining America? Re: Unions Ruining America? - Unions Ruining America? Unions ruining the world! As much as I respect bargaining rights and considerations of unions, I'm sick and tired of seeing others held hostage when unions go on strike to forcefully see their demands come to fruition - regardless of their longer term impacts on their business or economy. It erks me when I see government officials on strike too. They have the most cushiony jobs in the entire economy, and still find reason to complain about their situation. What about the poor people working 80 hour weeks just to feed their family? Something has got to give - we cannot continually exceed expectations without inflation or diminished returns affecting us.
Are Economic Recessions Good for Franchising? Are Economic Recessions Good for Franchising? - As I understand it, when there are more corporate layoffs you have more workers looking into starting their own business. It makes sense in a backwards sort of way. My first impression is that Franchising would take a hit like everyone else... but the more I look into it: [i:35vhc2a9]The opposite occurs[/i:35vhc2a9]. There's a larger pool of very qualified workers that are disenchanted with the corporate world. They are often more than willing to take a bigger risk and seek self-employment, whether it's a franchise or not. In my opinion, there are lots of good opportunities out there, it's just a matter of doing your research and finding a nice fit.
