Study: Workplace flexibility growing in US

Workplace flexibility programs have maintained popularity in the face of the harsh economic situation in the U.S., and in some cases are even being used by employers to avoid layoffs, according to a recent study by the Families and Work Institute (FWI).

Virtually all respondents, 94 percent, are either maintaining or increasing their workplace flexibility programs, according to the FWI. In addition, 26 percent of the employers surveyed said they had used some sort of flexible work option, such as reduced work weeks or work-from-home solutions, as a way to reduce the need to lay workers off.

"It is hardly surprising that our survey finds that 77 percent of employers are cutting and controlling labor and operational costs during the recession," said Ellen Galinsky, co-founder and president of FWI. "What is surprising is that that between 34 to 43 percent of employers are actively helping employees weather the recession."

The FWI survey looked at a random sample of 400 U.S. employers with 50 or more employees.

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Chair of the Joint Economic Committee, said that the survey is evidence that flexible work practices are beneficial in tough economic times as well as good ones.

Re: Prospects in animation business in coming years. Re: Prospects in animation business in coming years. - Yes the Animation Industry is growing and it needs cost effectiveness, more employees producing quality work. Whether you make a 2d or a 3d animation it requires lots of money, concentration, patience and it sometimes become painful too. Half of the job is done once you have developed the storyboarding. As video advertising is growing, it would adversely affect the television advertising. Recent trends have shown that advertising budgets for online advertising is rapidly growing against television advertising all over across the world. Gaming industry is on its peak these days and animation is in huge demand.
Solopreneurs Solopreneurs - Hi terriz, This is the main challenge - how to identify topics that are specific to solopreneurs that doesn't overlap with other areas as you mentioned - starting a business, marketing, growing, etc. Many of the companies (non-solo) that I speak with or people who are wanting to build companies have issues about self-financing, developing a personal brand, and growing without having to hire more staff. Perhaps you could put a topic or two in the Other Entrepreneur Topics and we can see the response!
Re: Why Did You Become An Entrepreneur? Re: Why Did You Become An Entrepreneur? - Hey Evan, I would fall within that 42% as I'm one who would rather be my own boss and not take orders from others. However, I guess the main reason would be is that I want to enjoy life and work on my own terms. The flexibility that being an entrepreneur brings is what I like most about it. Plus, it's best if you actually like what you do, and I couldn't be happier.
