New Year, New Start, New Job

Everyday throughout the world there are thousands of individuals who are being interviewed for their next, maybe first, maybe last, but definitely new job.

And in today’s credit crises world, there are often hundreds and hundreds of individuals going for the same role. On top of that, every day there are fewer and fewer vacancies on offer.

So to have the best chance of being successful and getting the job offer you have to be ready well in advance of the interview. The vast majority of the thousands of individuals being interviewed today (and tomorrow and the day after…) will not be. They will think they don’t have to prepare. They will think they have all the answers. They will think all they have to do is turn up for the interview.

How wrong they are.

But if there are numerous others going for the same role, that is an utterly crazy approach.

You Have To Prepare

You’ll want to be calm, cool, collected and confident so that you stand a great chance of landing the job.

Here are 5 ways you can prepare:

1. Research the company you want to work for. What do they do? What’s their history? What’s their financial position? Where are their locations? Most companies nowadays have their own websites and all this information can be researched in just a few minutes. By knowing this information, it will show you have taken an interest in the company, have bothered to put in some work up-front and that goes a long way in an interview.

2. List your strengths and skills and have examples of actual situations where you have positively used them. So if you are asked a question on your reliability (for example) you can share a story of one of your experiences. Most experiences can be tailored to several different competencies.

3. Be well groomed. Scruffy hair, dirty shoes, shabby clothes, 3-day stubble, un-kept smell - any of these (and several more) will put-off the Hiring Manager instantly. And if that happens, you might as well not have the interview. So be well groomed and dressed for the job. Remember you only get one chance to make a great first impression.

4. Decide what you are going to wear and try it on, a few days before the interview. Does it look right? You can always get someone else’s opinion. Once you have decided, lay out your clothing and shoes before you go to bed the night before the interview.

5. Plan your journey and know where you are going. You might have the address but do you know exactly where it is? Go there and visit the address a few days beforehand, so on the day you know exactly where to go and how long it takes. The last thing you can afford is to be stressed because you couldn’t find the address or be late.

If you prepare you will have a huge advantage other the majority of the others who are also being interviewed and in today’s world that is a crucial advantage.

Betting on the law of averages Betting on the law of averages - Dale Carnegie says "As the years went by, I gradually discovered that ninety-nine per cent of the things I worried about never happened... The most famous insurance company on earth-Lloyd's of London-has made countless millions of dollars out of the tendency of everybody to worry about things that rarely happen. Lloyd's of London bets people that the disasters they are worrying about will never occur. However, they don't call it betting. They call it insurance. But it is really betting based on the law of averages...don't happen nearly so often as people imagine" ("How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" 67 & 68). In the past, I think I spent an additional $130 for "3 Year Return to Depot Service and Technical Support" when I bought my Dell laptop and $30 for 2 years of replacement protection for my glass desk. While I've had to call Dell for technical support for my laptop on a few occasions, I've yet to replace any glass panel on my desk.
