Our Life’s Past – the Building Blocks To a Better Tomorrow

Our Life’s Past – the Building Blocks To a Better Tomorrow

John F. Kennedy Jr., the 35th President of the United States of America, once said “We don’t we don’t know where we are going, until we know where we have been.” This statement can’t be closer to the truth than when it comes to understanding the meaning of each event from our past in order to help build a more happy and successful tomorrow.

Before we begin, allow me to clarify the meaning of the word “PAST”. Webster’s Dictionary defines the word “Past” as “having existed in or having occurred during a time previous to the present moment”. In other words, by reading this line right now, the paragraph above has moved into the previous moment in time…the past.

Each and every day from the moment we wake up, we will make hundreds of decisions that will affect our lives in the present moment. With each “new” choice we are faced with, our best intentions for happiness are highest in our minds. Once we experience an outcome from this “new” decision, only then can we put a price tag on the end result and determine if it gave us a positive or negative response. This process will continue throughout our lives for each “new” choice that is upon us, while the previous one will become part of our past.

However, things change when we are faced with an “old” choice that reappears in the present moment. By recalling the past event and the end result it gave us, we can then educate ourselves and learn to either repeat the event because of a positive outcome or dismiss it and move right along so we don’t make the same mistakes twice. It’s with these “past” experiences that are our true building blocks for keeping us moving forward and to create a more happy and successful tomorrow.

Let me give you an example on how you can benefit from the “Past”. Let’s say that you dated a person who treated you with disrespect by cheating on you. By looking into the experience with this person, we can start taking inventory of the outcome. Did you receive a positive or negative result? Once you have this awareness, you can then evaluate how it truly made you feel in your heart. Did you feel happy or sad? By recognizing and analyzing the end result, your perception of this person may change from the time you met them until you left. Now, when a new person comes into view in the present moment, the first thing you recall from the past is the previous person that disrespected you by cheating. This red flag of cheating is the first thing you would want to talk about before you decide whether the new person is worthy of your time and love. As you can see, the past is like a photograph that you took and placed in a photo album of your subconscious. Any time you want to recall the effects of the past, you can bring the memory to the present moment in time to help you with a choice that will affect your future. By understanding the results of the past events in your life, you can truly predict the outcome because you have already lived the result.

Since becoming a life coach, I have realized our greatness comes in being positive, proactive and seeing the glass half full. Those who seem stuck in their lives or who dwell on being unhappy live mostly in the past and condition themselves to never learning from it. They continue to be blinded and ignore the signs that would have helped them move forward, and utilize fear to hold them back from horrible or hurtful experiences. Hence, the word past becomes an acronym for them meaning: P-eople A-lways S-tuck in T-ime.

Remember, the important thing is to have awareness of what is going on in your life so that you can recognize the patterns that you’ve already established and begin to make new and more productive choices to create the outcomes that you truly desire in the present. By simply shifting the focus, getting out of your own way, taking ownership and accepting the past, you can then alter it and change the acronym to mean something new: P-eople A-lways S-trengthening in T-ime.
