Effortlessness. Want More of it?

Imagine that there was a feeling of effortlessness to your day.

The word Mastery as we use it today comes from the French word: Maitre, meaning someone who is exceptionally proficient and skilled - the master of a craft. Mastery is the capacity to produce results, AND to MASTER the principles underlying the way you produce results. When you live and work at the level of mastery, there is a sense of joyousness and effortlessness in what you do - any struggle is gone.

Wow! Who wouldn't want to get to that level? Of course, who wouldn't want to attain mastery if it means effortlessness replaces the struggle!

So, how do you attain mastery? The key is to find joy in the practice, no matter where you are in it. Learn to love the process and enjoy where you are, while you make progress towards where you want to be.

I'm practicing this right now, playing Ultimate Frisbee in a league. It hurts because I am so out of shape!! Yet, I get out there every weekend (and have stepped up the consistency of my workouts in between games too), knowing that it will feel better and get easier the more I stick with it. My plans are not to master the sport, but I know that mastering my body and how I respond on the field is an exceptional feeling. To be able to do what I need to do (like sprint my but off and play hard defense) with a lot less struggle and more enjoyment (rather than pain!) gives me an incredible feeling of strength and success.

I'm sure you know what I am talking about. It's the difference between just making it through a run or workout, and feeling great, strong, and fit as you are doing it. The same goes for learning a new skill at your job, or studying for an exam for your certification. Learn to love exactly where you are in the process, and watch your progress.

Once you have found joy in the practice itself, much of the struggle is gone already, because you are enjoying exactly where you are right now in the present, knowing that you are progressing towards your goals. So, wherever you are working toward mastery, keep it up and love it!
