It is natural when we are working towards our goals in life that we focus our attention on achieving that final outcome. Whilst this dedication is something to be applauded, caution must also be shown that we don't overlook the small steps and successes that get us there.
All too often we are self depreciating - often to the point of embarrassment - when we are congratulated on doing something well. We often don't recognise those achievements if they are not our final goal either.
Well no more - it's time to start celebrating the small stuff!
Every step you make and mini target you reach should be acknowledged with a celebration. Remember, each success is strengthening your commitment to changing your life, reinforcing your confidence in making those changes and building your self belief in the process. These qualities don't just happen when you have reached your goal, they evolve on your journey to reaching it. Your celebration doesn't have to be a grand affair, it could just be a small acknowledgement or a gift to yourself as a reward for doing well. We use rewards to reinforce and encourage positive behaviour in others - and you should use them for yourself too!
This acknowledgement is also a great opportunity to review how far you have come in reaching your goal. Look at what you have achieved so far, what difference has it made to your life? How have you changed as an individual? What personal qualities or skills have you utilised to get you where you are now? This assessment is key in building upon your successes and your belief in reaching your goals.
Whatever you are working towards in your life at the moment, remember to stop and review how far you have come since you made that conscious decision to change. Recognise and congratulate your achievements so far - you have worked so hard to create a positive outcome for yourself.
Finally, make a promise to yourself - starting today, you will celebrate the small stuff. It makes everything you do worthwhile and a lot more fun!
