Feeling Guilty About Home and Work?
Feeling Guilty
Hi there, I'm David Oliver of Love Work Live Life
Being a working parent and feeling guilty is common. We all have more to do than we can ever get done. When I close my office door, I leave behind loose ends, projects that need rewriting, creative work that my brain couldn't cope with today and all the bitty jobs that I've put off until later.
At the same time I love my wife and my family. And there is more to do at home than will ever get done. My children have never said to me: 'Hey Dad, we've played enough why don't you run back into the house and get some work done'. My wife Gill has never complained about me coming home too early or doing too many things to help around the house.
In fact every parent knows that your children alone could occupy every waking hour if you let them. So let me take some pressure off here. Your problem is not discipline or organization. It's not that you have yet to stumble onto the perfect schedule. And it's not that the folks at home demand too much of your time. The problem is there is not enough time to get everything done that you are convinced - or others have convinced you - needs to be done.
When we believe we can do everything that's asked of us, then we're acting as if we're irreplaceable and superhuman even omnipotent!!. But if you and I are normal human beings like everyone else, then we have to get real about the fact that the amount of time we have is limited - and resolve not to try and do everything, but to concentrate on doing the things that really matter.
Do you know what your family needs more than anything else? I wonder what your answer to that question would be? You might say love or time. Sure it includes that. But actually what your family needs more than anything else is to feel like they are your priority.
If you're like me you might say well they are my priority. Maybe but they need to feel like they are. They must feel like it. The problem is I love my family in my heart but I don't love them in my schedule. And they can't see my heart.
Where we spend our time is an indication and the truest indication of
