PMA Is Limited But It Really Does Work On Stress
Positive Self Talk
I don't know exactly how it is in the USA but i do know that Brits are more like Eyore than Tigger
Ask the average Brit what is your day like what answer do we get?' Not too bad!!'
Most Brits will say 'I don't believe in it and it's out on the edge and slightly whacky'. Sorry!! The reality is that everybody has it and uses it to some degree. Having self talk is not the problem; problems begin when we are less aware or unaware of how positive or negative our self talk is and what impact it may have on how we behave, what we believe about situations and ultimately how it may affect my feelings about whatever I am discussing with me! Think about who you really like to be around and I can fairly certainly guarantee you will like being around people who are by and large positive.
You will have heard about PMA (positive mental attitude) recent studies now scientifically confirm that a PMA enhances wellbeing and emotional functioning. What is interesting is how our body responds to our self talk positively and or negatively. Our bodies of course secrete hormones. When we are positive some claim that we release DHEA (positive hormone) and when we are negative it is Cortisol (negative hormone). So when we are having a good day it often gets better and when we have a bad day the opposite can occur!
An action to support this would be:
Be more aware of Self Talk - stop critical, unrealistic talk and use positive benefit stating talk. In families endeavour to focus on the good the positive and help steer each other away from the negative
Left unchecked to do what it wants, self talk can lead us to create self limiting beliefs; that is the habit of telling ourselves something will not work because...
Judy Moskowitz, an adjunct assistant professor in the department of medicine at UCSF "I don't mean to minimize stress by saying 'just think positive.' It might sound very Pollyanna, but it really isn't. It's the ability to not be totally consumed by the negative, to broaden your perspective and open your eyes."
Positive Mining
Often this key, this principle, needs positively mining. I remember waking up several mornings in a row early, really anxious over some business and family issues.
My wife, Gill, turned over and said to me it's as if there's a huge sheet of glass in front of you and you have a big pot of black paint a big brush and with huge strokes you are covering this thing with black paint. Actually if you would look differently she said, you will see exquisite golden writing full of good things.
How do you and I see the value of what we do? Black paint or golden words? Let's discover its value even if that means a bit of mining work. And let's believe that value. And let's not settle until we have found it, believed it in our core, and expressed it.
(Stress buster tip - take responsibility for positively mining till you are sure the job you do makes a difference
