Stress Tactics & Vents

So stress isn't a new problem. However, today it is tough home settings, school issues, office politics, traffic jams, overwork and late nights that cause our levels to rise. Whereas cave dwellers burnt off the stress through that eventual fight or flight, we don't reach that final stage. As a result, we are increasingly all wound up with nowhere to go! Sometimes people love strategies and plans other times I have had people just wanting some practical help doable things that are doable now.

These 20+ ideas are not fundamental solutions they are coping mechanisms, but often on their own they can lighten the load amazingly. It is unlikely of course that all of these will be equally relevant to everyone, some will be more relevant to those in a business setting others more relevant for stay at home mums hopefully all of us whatever we are doing will find something useful in the list!

1. Look after your body

When stressed, we reach for quick fixes - stimulants like coffee, or foods high in fat or sugar. But this diet compounds the problem. Chocolate gives an initial sugar and caffeine buzz, but leaves you weary. Salty crisps dehydrate the body and brain and bring on fatigue. High fat meals raise stress hormones and keep them high. Do be aware of alcohol. I love a glass of wine and I have discovered that when I am stressed I love it more. One well documented danger here is that I ultimately become dependent upon that alcohol - that will in turn increase overall stress. The second possibly less obvious danger is that the following morning there is usually a resultant lowering of Positive Mental Attitude - or sense of well being - and that can be an unpleasant start to the day.

2. Space Pens & Note Pads. I keep a pad of paper and a ball point pen by my bed. In fact gill my wife bought me a nitenote fopr one Christmas stocking filler. I use it most nights to write down any thing that is troubling my mind. Any jobs or tasks I suddenly remember. Whatever version of the idea you use make sure it's ther every night. I asked Pete Sayers head tyeacher of a lrage school how he coped with huge stresslodas. Trade union officials, government ministreail level interference and unhappy parents. He had two answer and one of them was this stress vent. A sheet pf papaer and a flashlight by his bed to write all his nocturnally emerging worries. get the worries out of your head and reduce stress.

Re: Infographic: The 4 Main Stress Factors Re: Infographic: The 4 Main Stress Factors - I'd like to reference that article in my next blog post as well.. I worked in sales for years and found that days when I was positive, relaxed where days that it was easy to sell. On days that I was stressed I found I would not reach target. Stress is good at times, but it very easily becomes problematic. I do a lot of very physical exercise and work now, to manage it.
