What do you want from your work?

What do you want from your work?

If I said to you, 'What do you want - really want - out of your job?' I wonder what the answer would be?Is it money? Advancement? Career opportunities? - All good answers, but here's the thing: are those things a fruit or a root? Are they a driving cause or are they a useful outcome?

I honestly believe that if these answers are a reason - a root cause - for you and I doing the job we do, then you will never find fulfilment in our work. We might be committed to it, work exceptionally hard, and sacrifice just about everything, including our family life and our health, to it. But we will still feel like we've never quite made it.

Often the things we want out of work - more pay, promotion, opportunities - are actually the fruit of working well. And I've usually found that when people work well it's not because they're motivated by their pay or their career - it's because they are doing something they love to do.

If you're tired of working in a job that you've begun to hate, then perhaps its time you looked to use your gifts, talents and abilities that are locked up inside and start doing something you love to do.Marion Wright Edeleman said service is the rent for being it is the reason for existence. Dickens said no-one is useless in this life who lightens the load of it for another. And the scripture say whatever you do, do it with your whole hear as serving the Lord knowing it is from Him you will receive your reward.

Sometimes just changing our motivation is all the change we need because when we find the right reasons to do the job we do, we'll rediscover our passion for the job as well.

Re: Workaholism May Be Killing You Re: Workaholism May Be Killing You - Hi Evan, Thanks for this post, I found the article very interesting and I do regularly work 12 hours or more but that is a total of my day job then Internet work when I get home, I must say that I agree with Michelle that I only feel that I work at my day job and my Internet work I really enjoy although some nights I go to bed absolutely shattered. There is an old saying that I think I may have used here before but it is something like “If you enjoy what you do then you never do a days work in your life”. If I ever get to the stage when I work form home full time then this would be the case for me because I love this work and would do it full time from home tomorrow if I could. regards, Mal.
Home Office vs Rented Office Home Office vs Rented Office - Another advantage to having a home office is the low overhead expenses. My monthly office costs would be increased by 300-400% if I had to rent an office. THis allows me to pass those savings on to my clients and also decreases the financial stress of being in business. I appreciate the savings that a home office gives me and none of my clients mind. Its not for everyone and I understand that. I have friends who work from home and they have lots of distractions. I get far more work done since I work from home, although I do work much longer hours, but that's my choice at this point. I wouldn't want to work until 10 or 11 pm and then have to travel home, but this arrangement makes it work for me. Shri
Working Environment Working Environment - Probably you should have a separate place and good work environment, its very essential to have work focused atmosphere and also you should enjoy whatever work you do.
Working With Family Working With Family - It depends on your relationship. I've worked with both of my sisters, my brother in law, and my girlfriend on different business ventures. They are smart, talented people who compliment the skill sets that I have. I also trust them and know that they work very hard. There are also a few members of our Mastermind Groups who are in business with their spouses and they love the opportunity to work and spend every day with each other. It doesn't always work out and you have to ask yourself if your personalities will work well together or not but I would recommend exploring the opportunity if you see a fit.
Re: How many vacation and sick days do you give yourself? Re: How many vacation and sick days do you give yourself? - I don't give myself a set amount of days off. If I'm sick then I don't work. If I want to take a vacation, I just do it. If I have something more important to do than work, I do it. If I just don't feel like working, I don't. Yes, it hurts productivity but that doesn't bother me. A big part of the reason I am an internet marketer is so I can have the freedom to do things like that. I don't want to limit myself to a certain number of days off. That would feel too much like a regular job. There are also plenty of weekends and holidays that I work. It just depends on whether or not I am doing anything else. Basically I try to at least do a little work every day but if I don't then I don't. No big deal.
