ADHD and Addiction
Adults with ADHD have almost triple the rate of addiction than that of adults without ADHD. Alcohol and marijuana are the most common substances used. Other types of addictions include nicotine, caffeine, sugar and street drugs.
Some adults use stimulants such as nicotine and caffeine "pick me ups" to help them concentrate and give them mental energy for their daily actions. Others use marijuana or alcohol to calm themselves and relax their busy mind. One of my clients said she smoked marijuana to feel and behave like a "normal" person.
This type of substance use is "self medicating." A Harvard study found of the young adult participants, 70% did not use substances to get high, rather as a sleep aid, a mood enhancer, or another comparable reason. This type of "self medication" is particularly prevalent in people who do not know they have ADHD or have the diagnosis but aren't treating their ADHD. This is backed up by another study that found people with ADHD who were taking prescribed ADHD medication were far less likely to drink or abuse drugs.
Stopping addictions is never easy... BUT it is possible. If you feel that you are addicted to a substance, don't be ashamed or embarrassed. Those feelings will stop you from getting the help you need. There is nothing to be ashamed about. All you need to do now is treat the problem in a different and healthy way. I believe there is a 4-prong approach, which I've outlined below:
- First acknowledge that you might have a problem. Tell a very supportive friend, your doctor or visit your local AA meeting. By telling someone, it brings your "secret" to the surface and helps you to know that people will still love you... regardless.
- Get help for your ADHD. If you haven't already gotten an official diagnosis, get one! Talk to your doctor about ADHD medication. Join an ADHD support group in your area, work with an ADHD coach and start to implement the non-pharmaceutical ways to reduce the negative effects of ADHD on your life.
- Get to the root of the problem. The type of substance will help guide you on what you need in your life. For example, were you taking a stimulant or something the help you relax? If it was the latter, think of other ways you could relax, such as your favourite exercise, meditation, time with your pet, etc.
- Look at your life. In a fascinating study on rats, Canadian psychologist Bruce Alexander found the environment influenced whether lab rats would choose to consume morphine. When they were in a cramped cage (rat hell), they wanted the morphine. However, even rats who had been given morphine for nearly 60 consecutive days and were then placed in a rat park (rat paradise), they chose plain water, NOT water laced with morphine.
If we transfer the findings to your life, we can see that if you set your life up to be fun and enjoyable for you, you will have less need to use your substance of choice. You may need to do some soul searching to discover what changes you need to make, or you might know the second you read this what you need to do.
Remember, don't be judgemental with yourself. Take action and notice the positive results.

Re: Take Some ACTION already!
- I think once you have an idea that is really solid, you need to run with it. All of your working hours should be concentrated on making it happen. Many people have great ideas but get distracted when the next great idea comes along. It's like they are opportunity hoppers. I guess they think that they'll make money quicker with this newer idea and they lose focus on what they were trying to originally build up. I hear stories like this a lot. Maybe it's entrepreneurial adult ADHD. Who knows. Don't lose confidence in an idea that you have researched and found as solid. Stick with it until you make it happen and don't get side-tracked by anything else, no matter how great it looks.
dont be niave
- I was watching the news a few weeks ago (I try not too) and hear the reporter say 'more grocery chains will be selling meat from cloned animals in the near future". Did she mean that we are already buying and eating meat from 'cloned' animals now?? eek!
But sadly its naive to think that anything we eat, put on our bodies or inhale hasnt been modified, improved or genetically enhanced. And yet, the world wonders why more and more people have allergies, mental disorders, ADHD, autism etc. Its the poor children that really suffer!
I dont have much more hope for the Organic growers out there. I think the world is too far gone when it comes to what we eat and how produce, and meat is mass produced.
Did you know that genealogy in cattle is more popular than for ourselves? Grocers and producers can now itemize where that pork chop came from and who its great grandmother (clone or not) was. Hmm....
And people wonder why I refuse to immunize myself or my family!
And dont even get me started on milk and the junk they put in that. In fact, I have a pure boycott on milk in general. Have you ever wondered why humans even drink milk? We are the only species that drinks milk after we have been 'weaned' from our mothers...
Gross.
So in short, it doesnt surprise me that onions will soon be tear free. In fact, I wonder if they will instead inject them with something like a giggle agent, so instead of crying when you peel onions, you can have a warm fuzzy happy experience.
Oi!
Boosting Confidence
- Wow! There has been so much response, it's hard to know where to start responding... I goes to show that confidence is a hot topic!
If you’ve ever heard of “Executive’s Disease”, you’ve heard that even the most successful people in business have moments where they feel stressed over something that needs to be done. It sounds so much nicer to call it stress, but stress is strongly linked to FEAR on some level or another. [u:16vd1x1j]We’re all human after all. [/u:16vd1x1j] (Perhaps this is why executives have much higher rates of heart disease. They appear to be 100% confident to everyone else, but they still feel it on some level inside.)
Jude, thanks for sharing your journey to great confidence. I can relate to your dog story, by the way. I’m the person my neighbors and friends call when they have a pet problem. When I was working with the Pet Rescue Group, someone called me the Cat Whisperer! :0)
I also believe that confidence is tied to self worth and competence. Boosting our self esteem and gaining confidence through experience really does help.
The question is, what does a person do to boost her confidence when she comes up against those times where she’s facing big issues that are new to her? For example, if you were going to be on Oprah with millions of people watching you for the very first time, what would you tell yourself to chase away the butterflies that might set in?
In a perfect world, we would all be walking around stress free and not have any doubts or fears. However, life is full of challenges, especially as entrepreneurs forging new paths. The key is in finding ways to really boost our courage to forge on when the going gets tricky and unfamiliar.
Yes, I believe when we have a strong purpose behind what we do, it gives us confidence to move forward in spite of any misgivings or naysayers. When we add passion to that purpose, we seem unstoppable!
It also boosts our confidence to surround ourselves with people who support us in our journey. Of course, we believe we can create a great life and business. They just give us the added benefit when they cheer us on. We are social creatures, after all. I can do well on my own, but I have a coach and am part of a mentor group because I find I accomplish even more with a strong support system. (Coaching isn’t about weakness, it’s about doing everything I can to reach my potential in the best possible way.)
Support systems certainly help to keep the scales balanced when we find ourselves around people who don’t understand our vision. We need to lay down very strong boundaries for the people who are not supportive. That’s a whole other discussion. One of our weapons is keeping ourselves convinced of our plan and our purpose, even if someone else is threatened by our success (or plans for success).
Sometimes, we can be tempted to make ourselves small around those we love so that it doesn’t cause discord. When we do that, we jeopardize our own integrity and undermine our confidence. This is your life to live and your business to run. It is you who must hold the reigns and you who must succeed at your own life. Let them succeed at their own life.
Having said this, I think we must at least examine what they challenge us with to see if there is any truth in what they are saying. The key is in finding out the truth [u:16vd1x1j]before you let it in[/u:16vd1x1j]. Otherwise, something that is simply not true (and may be THEIR issue) could throw you off track. If it is true, you can make the necessary changes and perhaps avoid some huge pitfalls down the road.
Beat mentioned the books, Approval Addiction and Battlefield of the Mind. I’ve read quite a bit of them and it’s little wonder they are best sellers because of their subject matter. I’ve heard many people comment on the titles themselves.
There’s the old saying, “If you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t, you can’t.” There’s even a scripture verse on it for those of you who’ve brought that aspect into this thread: “Everything is possible for him who believes.” (Mark 9:23) No wonder true success comes from the inside out.
OK, it’s time to stop. I feel like I’ve written a book here!
Warm regards,
Tami
