6 Qualities of a Great Leader in a Virtual Team

Our world is nothing but an unending cycle of change. We are experiencing change in many aspects and one of those is how to manage employees. Many companies have changed in the way they manage their employees because unlike before, a lot of companies and organizations nowadays are becoming active in the global scene. They want to become globally competitive but at the same time they still want to keep in touch with the local markets. That's why the knowledge of working virtually became a necessity. There are many benefits of going with virtual teams. One of those is that virtual team members produce projects for the company, locally, nationally and internationally. But how can you have an effective virtual team if you don't have an effective virtual leader? New skills in leadership are always required so that a strong relationship will develop in a virtual community. A leader must always think of new ways, new strategies, and new techniques to connect with his/her team so that they can work well and be productive.

The following are tips for a great leader to follow:

1. Lead and be a good example. Since you are the leader, good examples and practices must always begin with you. You must be alert, honest, active, and prolific.

2. Exert more effort. As a leader, you must also exert your effort in giving rewards and praises to your remote workers who did a great job since there are only few chances that you get to see them. That way, your team of workers will be more inspired to do their job well.

3. Stay connected. Communication is the key for the success of a virtual office. Since you don't see your workers often you must always communicate with them. You can use video conference, the internet, or other modern technologies as a great means of communication.

4. Have the ability to encourage. If a leader has this ability then his workers will follow him or her willingly.

5. Understand cultural barriers. Being a leader in virtual offices means you will work with people of diverse cultures. You must give some of your attention in understanding these cultural differences and including them in your plan for implementation.

6. Create communication flow. Create effective communication guidelines and systems and continue to send your workers some updates so that they can feel that they are really part of the process and also to show them all the progress that has been made.

Re: Anyone Uses Elance.com? Guru.com? Rentacoder.com? Re: Anyone Uses Elance.com? Guru.com? Rentacoder.com? - I've had quite a bit of success on oDesk.com. I've never used Elance so I can't compare. I like oDesk.com 'cos I get to sort thru people (e.g. within a certain bid range) with a single click. I find their help response very quick and I like the oDesk Team software that "providers" must install. This gives me the Buyer more insight as to what I am paying for. The Team software takes screenshots of the Providers screen on 10 min increments so I can see that the person is infact doing work for me.

Blank text field might be better Blank text field might be better - Hi TheAnonymousMan, I like your idea! I'm assuming it would be similar to the status feature on Facebook where it might say "Kevin is ... " So I think having a blank text field in the profile box (and even "Leader" boxes on the left and top side of the forums if possible) might be more fun than just choosing from pre-set options from a drop down menu:D
Re: Traditonal Demographics Do NOT Work with Generation V Re: Traditonal Demographics Do NOT Work with Generation V - That article is the first time I ever heard the term. I found this definition - [i:189o61sy]The term Generation V (for Virtual) is used to describe the online culture in which relationships, services and communication are carried primarily and preferably through electronic media. Generation Virtual is made up of people from multiple demographic age groups who make their social connections primarily online - through virtual worlds in online games, in social networks, as bloggers, or through posting and reading user-generated content.[/i:189o61sy] I like the targeting options the internet offers much better than the typical demographics. Age is particular is not nearly as effective in finding a target market unless you want to target kids. Too many of the typical demographics rely on stereotypes and just seems outdated for many types of promotion. That's one of the reasons this article title caught my eye. Shri
