Copy Writing Tips For Beginners

The top producers in Internet marketing insist on the importance in learning copy writing and then point out the lack of interest in others in learning more about it. Copy writing is another skill that can be learned and developed through practice just as the other skills Internet marketers must learn. The reward, however, can be great, leading to greater profits by increasing conversion rates and attracting more qualified customers.

First they must know how to be found, so they "hang out where their customers are" as David Schwind explains. Copy writers make it easy for people looking for their product to find them. A copy writer needs to know who their costumers are, what they are looking for, and how their customers are searching for answers to their questions. This will help them know the right vocabulary to use to entice their costumers to take the next step.

Good Copy writers go beyond creating interest. They entice readers to take action by "artfully attracting readers by arousing hope or desire" instead of using mere curiosity. Why is this important? People don't care about what the the marketer cares about, so marketers must remember to focus on what their subjects need or want. Their readers have three important questions when they arrive on a web site, landing page, blog, or ad: 1) What are you offering?; 2) What can it do for me?; and 3) How do I get it?.

The copy writer therefore reverses the thought process by answer these questions: 1) Here's what I have; 2) Here's what it can do for you; and 3) Here's what to do next. Don't waste their time by welcoming them to your site or introducing yourself. Get straight to the point: Here's what you're looking for; Here's some information to help you; Here's how to get more information. That's all the copy writer needs and all the reader wants.

Beginning marketers should target people similar to who they were when they first got into marketing. They know or share the same thoughts and feeling as their readers. They understand the questions, needs and possible objections of their readers, and because of this, will have greater credibility.

To learn more about copy writing, I suggest these foundational books to start off with: The Copy Writers Handbook 3rd Ed. by Robert W. Bly, Hypnotic Writing by Joe Vitale, The Adweek Copywriting Handbook by Joe Sugarman, and finally The Robert Collier Letter Book by Robert Collier. Read these books in this order. Bly's book is the most basic and Collier's book the most advanced.
