Life can be good after getting laid off

You received a pink slip today. After your recover from shock, shame and embarrassment. You arein denial and disbelief. You feel abandoned and overwhelmed and do not want to share this information with loved ones. You rush to the safety of home and have more shameful feelings. You want to crawl in a hole and cover yourself. You finally share the news with your family and they are surprised and disappointed, as well.

You and your family have decisions to make, fast.

  1. Overhaul your expenses. Cut back on everything with a hatchet.
  2. Conserve your cash.
  3. If you, or a family member, have a pre-existing medical condition do everything possible to keep your health insurance.
  4. Apply for unemployment.
  5. Exercise, this is a great stress buster
  6. Take time to grieve your loss, it is real
  7. Work on your attitude.
If you have been depressed, snap out of it. It is time for an overhaul in your thinking. The shock and despair has worn off and you have come to terms with what has happened. Now is the time to have a serious talk with first, yourself and then your family.

Some of the questions you want to consider are:

  1. How do I really feel about that job/career?
  2. Is this a good time for me to rethink my options?
  3. Is this a path I want to take for the duration of my working life?
  4. Finally, what lessons are in this for me?
Entrepreneurs do not get laid off. They do not fire themselves. It could be time to consider being your own boss and having a business to call your own. You can make as much money as you choose. This is an abundant world and you can have your share. It is a decision away. Is it time for a career change? Is it time to begin that search for a business that you can build into your empire? When you put together your game plan, considera business of your ownas part of your future.

Life can take unexpected turns. You could be distraught because of this experience, but one day, down the road, you could thank your former employer for letting you go. Like so many difficult experiences in life, once you walk through them you realize that they were opportunities to move you along a different path. It is all about your attitude and what you make out of this experience. This too shall pass.

The Second Life Platform The Second Life Platform - Greetings! I'm not sure how many of you have heard of or are sensitive to Second Life and its related entities. However, Second Life is a fantastic platform to mimmick real life business operations in a real currency based economy. There are plenty of successful stories for creative individuals, but I'd highly suggest doing your research and appreciating Second Life for what it is, and what it isn't.

So are you currently a member? And more importantly, have you tried to open a store front in that virtual world?
Re: Charge what you're worth Re: Charge what you're worth - [quote="Tami Szabo":292ze3jd]People will pay you what you ask. Very few will ever up the price. You are the one who decided what you are worth. The key is that we believe our services are worth the price we are asking.[/quote:292ze3jd] Hi Tami, You're absolutely right. In "Think and Grow Rich", Jessie B. Rittenhouse says "For Life is a just employer, He gives you what you ask, But once you have set the wages, Why, you must bear the task. I worked for a menial's hire Only to learn, dismayed , That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have willingly paid" (Napoleon Hill 35). I think the same can be said when setting prices on eBay or Craigslist, especially when people are trying to haggle you.
Re: Unions Ruining America? Re: Unions Ruining America? - I'm can't speak for what's happening in the US but until 2 weeks ago I was employed by a major car manufacturer in the UK Now I, and hundreds of others in just 2 plants alone have been laid off and more are being made redundant or pensioned off in the New Year. This is happening all over the UK with different car manufacturers and I for one am not getting paid anything at all. I was simply told that's it, there's no more work (and yes I was in the union, I've now cancelled my subscription!) Of course it will be different for the people who have worked there for years, I'd only been there 2 years, but I do know that they are trying to con those that are left, people who have worked hard all their lives for the same company, out of there hard earned redundancy or pension. Now the retail trade is being hit here too, and hard, with 2 major stores going bust this week alone and others looking very likely to follow. I doubt the 30,000 + people in retail who have been laid off already will be treated fairly either. Unions? I daren't print my opinion! Carol
Entrepeneurs Entrepeneurs - That is an awesome list of questions and right on target. And, the acknolwedgement that you could fail is necessary. No matter how good any of us are, there are outside forces we cannot control and that are impossible to plan for. Look at New Orleands. Even though people knew deep in their mind that a horrible flood/hurricane was distinctly possible, there were insufficient plans to actually come through the storm when it hit. What's that saying about "the best laid plans". Chris
