You Need to be Stingy!

The American Heritage Dictionary defines “stingy” as “giving or spending reluctantly.” Our culture usually attaches a negative stigma to this term and tends to link it to being selfish, etc.

However, I would like to posit that it’s just fine and actually advisable to be stingy when it comes to your time and attention.

While we tend to wear a badge of “multi-tasking” or “busy-ness” as a good thing these days; I have actually been realizing lately that I am actually at my worst when I’m so fragmented.

I think that truly underscores the value of priorities (and the danger of a lack of them).

From our Blackberries to our co-workers, our churches to our websites – all are constantly screaming for our time and attention. The REAL question is which of these actually deserves it? I bet it’s less of these than you think.

In sales, we always talk about “ROI” or Return On Investment. Basically that’s the benefit that one can expect from the investment of their money. Here’s the thing: you can always make more money. You can never get more time.

I can poke around social media sites and the web for hours, but what is my return on investment of doing so? I can try to convince myself that “I’m building a community” or I can be honest and get to the business of my ROI. What’s your time waster?

I (and you) need to be stingy with your time.
