Are You Comparing Yourself?

Have you ever found yourself comparing yourself to others? Perhaps you have one particular person with whom you hold with high regard. Or maybe you sit beside a colleague who seems to have it all together - the perfect figure, great clothes, and seems to be into cool things. Perhaps you're endeavoring into a new business and feel small because someone else is doing what you want to be doing and you're feeling unworthy, not as good, slow, to old, behind in the game, overwhelmed.

Sound familiar? Let's get real now. We've all been there at one time or another. And, let me clarify something before we begin. It's important to have role models and people to admire. Those people are demonstrations of your own values, wants and desires. When you see and admire someone, it is an example of what you would like for yourself. Unfortunately, what tends to happen is you may find yourself in a state of envy rather than in a state of inspiration.

Which place does your mind take you? Do you want to crawl into the nearest corner? Feel stricken? Diminished? Or enraged? Or do you feel inspired and then love your own unique path? Be honest now...

We view the world through the lens about how we feel about ourselves and therefore, this is where you need to be mindful of your emotions and beliefs about yourself.

If you end up in the place of envy you will definitely find yourself feeling badly - to say the least. The beating stick could come out with a vengeance, reminding you again about how much more weight you have to lose, or how much better they are than you or how far behind you are. This just leads to more self sabotage and will lead you down the path of staying small and feeling bad about yourself.

On the other hand, you could also choose to look at these people through the lens of inspiration and give yourself a break about your own situation. Here are three beliefs (beliefs are simply thoughts you hold to be true and keep thinking about over and over and over...) I'd like to offer you in exchange for your envy.

Three Empowering Beliefs

1 - Your path is perfect. Don't compare yourself with anyone. Each of us has a unique path and purpose. The details of your life are special to you. There is always someone who is or seems smarter, richer, funnier, sexier, more spiritually evolved - the list goes on and on.

2 - Feel your power and beauty. I savor Marianne Williamson's words: "Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure...There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you." Let this be your model. How often do you short change yourself or become invisible? It is not egotistical to be proud of your strengths. Start to allow yourself to see yourself as beautiful and to own your own light and shine. This is tough work as we're not taught to really love ourselves. In the beginning you may feel vulnerable and exposed yet denying your own beauty does nothing and it should not be mistaken for humility.

3 - Allow yourself to surrender to your emotions. This means to be with your emotions. Befriend them and don't resist them. If you feel small, angry, mad, envious then allow yourself time to fully feel into that. Explore what your hang ups are. Then take a bit of time to listen to what you need for your own situation - not dependent upon anyone else. Be gentle with yourself and allow yourself to get to where you want to go at a comfortable place, using role models as inspiration and guidance.

You're Success Assignment:

None of us is immune to comparing ourselves to others. Yet you can set yourself free from feeling envy and embellishing your shortcomings.

Give yourself some compassion, stop beating yourself up at every opportunity. This will take a radical shift in your mindset and will lead you down the path of a more enriching inquiry into whom you are and who you want to become.

Stop hiding or feeling ashamed. Face your strengths and you will for certain start to have many breakthroughs. You will most likely end up inspiring someone else.

Now, if you'd like to find more clarity and insight into your own life and want to start to feel good in your own skin, let's get a move on! Get ready for some definite long lasting changes in your life starting today. Don't wait for another year to pass you by. Finally tackle yourself sabotage, overwhelm, procrastination, clean up your clutter and pave the way for a more focused, deliberate life.
