Find Your First Customer

The best way to start a business is by working with a customer who will pay you to solve a problem for them.

Most entrepreneurs do the exact opposite.

They spend countless hours and thousands of dollars to launch a product or service only to find that nobody wants to buy it.

What you end up selling and being successful with is rarely what you started with.

The closer you are to your customers, the more likely you'll hit with a winning offering faster.
 
Try as much as possible not to start your business until you have a paying customer.

Here’s a quick example from my story:

I had a software company that had a lot of sophistication to it and we sold into major corporations around the world.

The most complicated feature in the software was an algorithm that we were really proud of but our customers didn’t really care that much about.

We built it thinking they would love it but didn’t ask them first.

Luckily the software still had enough other great features in it that we could make some sales but imagine how far we could have gotten if didn’t waste our time on the features that nobody cared about and focused our efforts on the ones they wanted?

Since that mistake I’ve always tried to build my businesses around the customer and get them saying “Yes, I want this!” before we start making it.

I hope you can learn from my mistake and not make the same one yourself!

How can you do it?

Start talking to your potential customers.

Get to know them and their challenges.

Understand what makes them tick and what their big pain points are.

Go to trade shows and industry events.

Become an expert in your field and start giving speeches, blogging, and using social media.

Be a resource for the mainstream media whenever they need an authority to quote for their articles.
 
When you find people with a major pain and you have the ability to help them, you're ready to launch your business!
