Find a Mentor

The fastest and most effective way to grow your business is to model the strategies of people who have already done what you're trying to do.

Success leaves clues and by taking a deeper look into how people you respect became successful, you can take what worked for them, modify it to fit your business, and shortcut your way to the top.

When you're modeling people it's important to look at how they got started.

I don't care how Bill Gates makes an extra million dollars today but how he went from an idea to making his first million can help you forge your path.

My first real business was a biotech software company.

I was a co-owner with two partners, was 19 years old, and had to go out and bring in business.

At first it was overwhelming. I was young, didn't know anything about biotech, and wasn't a software expert either.

But then I thought to myself: I'm not the first guy to go out and try to sell software before.

I researched software companies like Microsoft, Intuit, and McAfee to see how they got started and we implemented clues from their success into our business.

It worked.

Our business grew and a couple of years later we were acquired by a large Japanese company with North American ties.

When you're looking to model success I recommend starting in two places.

First, look to your industry.

Look at the big players and see how they got started.

The bigger the company is, the easier it is to find out about their story.

You might not find someone directly related but there should be many indirect examples.

For my old company, there wasn't a huge biotech software company we could model because it was still such a new industry.

But there were other software companies I could research and their strategies were directly applicable to our business.

The second strategy is to look at people you respect, even if they're not in your industry, and model their success.

Are you a fan of Warren Buffett or Oprah Winfrey?

How about Ray Kroc or Richard Branson?

Even though they may not be in your industry, you can still learn from their success and take nuggets of wisdom to apply to your business.

I also find that researching famous entrepreneurs who I respect gives me extra motivation to keep doing what I'm doing.

You'll often find that these now famous entrepreneurs started with nothing but an idea.

They usually had no money, very few people believed in them, and they had to fight incredible odds to succeed.

If they can do it, you can do it.
