The Terry Matthews (Mitel) Story – Modeling The Masters

Terry-MatthewsI’m proud to announce our latest famous entrepreneur profile to EvanCarmichael.com: Terry Matthews from Mitel who has built over 100 companies and has gone on to become a billionaire.

modeling-the-mastersYou might not know him by name, but this entrepreneur has started up almost 100 companies and, as Wales’ first billionaire, is richer than even Prince Charles. An engineer by training, Terry Matthews became Wales’ richest man by fixing and building things ever since he was young. What started as $4000 in capital and a “long, long holiday” has since become one of the greatest examples of successful serial entrepreneurship in the world.

A journalist once suggested to Mathews, “The standard wisdom is that Canadians are more risk-averse than Americans and therefore less aggressive.” Matthews’ response? “Okay, so I suggest you write some articles to stay that’s bullshit. Canadians need to just get on with it.”Get on with it is exactly what Matthews did, working to build almost 100 high tech communications companies in Canada and the United Kingdom, and finding success every time. How did he do it?

  1. Nope, I had never heard of him but reading through his profile I definitely learned a lot of valuable tips. He’s certainly had a lot of success.

  2. Glad you enjoyed Trent!

  3. I worked for Terry in the very early days of Mitel, circa 1976, and found him to be an incredible person to work for. He always led by example. It’s because of Terry that Mitel and his other companies have become what they are today. Terry has an exceptional work ethic and it is very infectious.

  4. One of the biggest killers of success for entrepreneurs is when they go out and they pick up one project, and two projects, and three projects, and four projects. And five projects.
