Hello, Believe Nation, my name is Evan Carmichael. My one word is Believe, and I believe that entrepreneurs are going to solve all of the world’s major problems. So to help you on your journey today we’re going to learn how to chase happiness, and success will follow. And as always, as you’re watching, if you hear something that really resonates with you, please leave it down in the comments below and put quotes around it so other people can be inspired. And when you write it down, it’s much more likely to stick with yourself, as well. Enjoy.
Chase HAPPINESS and SUCCESS will Follow
So, you really have to decide. The most important decision is do I want to be happy. Will I commit to being happy? More important than happy, sometimes you’ll be so happy, you smile so much your face hurts, right? You need variety. Am I committed to living in a beautiful state even when it doesn’t go my way? Even when it rains on my parade? Even when my biggest fear shows up? Because I can’t control whether your husband or wife will live or die, or get sick, or leave you, or get a divorce.
I don’t want any of that to happen to any human being. I hate suffering. I do anything I can to help people not suffer. But I can’t control that, you can. There are people who have lost their arms, lost their sight. There have been people that have been through the most horrific experiences in life and they found a way to still be happy, because they made the decision that life is too short to suffer. I’ve interviewed dozens and hundreds over the years, but dozens that have impacted my soul.
That made me realize I can change this. I’ve just gotten used to it. I bought into the theory that this survival software that’s constantly running and making you suffer, that that’s normal. No, that’s what the mind will do. And mind has been around forever. What I want to do is something different. And the way I get out of suffering, I give myself a 90-second rule. It’s really simple. I say look, if I feel myself starting to feel that stress, feeling that pissed-offness, or upsetness, or concern, or worry about my kids, whatever, I realize that’s not going to make it better.
Life’s too short to suffer. And then I just kind of breathe slowly, slow everything down. And I just watch the thought go by and go, “Look at that crazy thought.” Because everybody has had crazy thoughts. Everybody has had a thought, “I’m going to kill that son of a bitch,” right? And then you don’t kill him, because you don’t believe that thought. It’s the thoughts that are stressful that you believe that mess you up.
When you question them, you break the pattern. The more I’ve done this, it’s like a muscle, the more I’ve trained myself to do it, I can authentically tell you now it takes a lot for something to take more than 90 seconds for me now. And the level of joy surpasses all the money you could ever have in a million years. And then the money, it’s easier to even make money because you’re not attached.
You don’t have the fears, you don’t have the scarcity that people have because you feel so rich already right now. I always tell people don’t wait to be rich. What is that richness? It’s abundance, it’s joy, it’s happiness, it’s contribution. It’s getting out of yourself.
Because as long as you’re thinking about, oh, my god, I lost something. Or you did something, now I have less love, less respect, less money. If I think loss, less, or because you did something or because I did something, I’m never going to have what I want in my life. Loss, less, never, those three thought patterns, they’re the source of all suffering. And the antidote, see it for what it really is, know it’s BS, and find something to appreciate.
Kendrick: You want the flashy things until you grow older, you know, as an adult and you be able to understand yourself a little bit more. I learned that them things didn’t make me happy. I learned that really money really don’t make me, I’m learning that now. That’s not really my peace of mind having money. That’s something I learned this year. And years before that I learned that jewelry and all that stuff don’t even make me happy. When you learn that, you’ll be able to grow, grow more as a person. What makes me happy is really challenging myself and knowing that I’ve defeated my last goal, and took myself to the next level as a better person.
Well the best thing I’ve learned, and advice I could give maybe my younger self, is really to focus on happiness. Happiness is the key because there’s so many people that you see, they’re in this industry, or just in life in general, that are going through their days and may have everything they could ever want, but they’re not happy. So you have to focus on what makes you happy and make decisions in your career, in your life, that make you happy.
And so, I’ve been trying to do that and it’s working. And saying no to things that are negative, and saying no to things that you don’t want to do. So, I think that’s my biggest piece of advice. Something I do, or I try to do every day, is I try to make someone, whether it be in my team, or my life, or whatever, just happy. Or I try to make them feel good, or feel comfortable, or feel loved, whatever it may be. It could be the littlest thing.
It could be just saying, “Oh, you look really pretty today.” Or it could be something even smaller than that or something bigger than that, it doesn’t really matter. But it’s just making a conscious effort to make someone feel good. And that could be a stranger or it could be your mom.
If you follow your passion, you’re going to be successful no matter what. Because one, you’ll be happy. And I think happiness is really important. You can’t do anything well if you’re not happy. You can’t be a good parent, a good spouse, girlfriend, boyfriend; you can’t be a good coworker. Happiness is important.
And that doesn’t mean euphoria every day but a basic sense of peace. And for some of us, especially type A and especially people who are hard on ourselves, we don’t give ourselves a break. And so the pursuit of happiness, as we have it written, obviously, in our Declaration of Independence, is something that is challenging. So, pursuing happiness I do think is as important as a pursuit of anything else.
Man: Let’s talk about how things developed in terms of when you started to play shows. Give us a bit of insight into, were you sort of playing smaller club shows? I know you released stuff through a thing called Myspace back in the day and how that evolved, tell us about that journey.
Before MySpace I sold some cd’s too. Maybe there’s no science in what it takes to be musician because this wasn’t called music even a couple years ago. The first time I went to the Grammys people we’re still like why is this guy at the Grammys he’s not making music. Make music for the 16 years old inside yourself even when you’re 50 years old. F*ck the craft, Everyone can learn how to do this s***. Cutivate your own things, stick together and just do that.
Have some fun making some music. If it’s fun – that’s all that matters. You look back and you go like, and I met some people, you know, it was fun, that’s cool. I’m in the same room you’re all sitting in right now. I’m in the same place you guys are
What’s success, anyway? Is success about making the most money? No, not, no. Money, for the most part, turns people into jerks. If you do become rich, the university fundraising and development office will certainly want to stay in touch with you. And if you give enough money, you’ll get your name on a plaque above the dirty laundry bin here in the men’s locker room. But that still doesn’t make you a great person, and it definitely doesn’t mean anyone will like you.
Don’t get me wrong, as I mentioned before, you’re never going to feel richer than when you’ve paid off those credit cards and student loans. But after that, money tends to be pretty unfulfilling. Almost all the people I know who have made a lot of money they turn into that guy. Alright, well you know the guy who pops his collar? And if it were up to him and he were wearing two shirts, he could pop both collars, that’s the guy.
So how will we know when we’ve done it right? What’s the ultimate measure of success then? What’s the key to success? Well, in my experience, quite simply, success if happiness. It all comes down to happiness. And I definitely don’t mean that happiness that you feel when the Gophers take over on downs in their own red zone, as great as that feels. I mean that happiness that quite literally fills your lungs.
The kind of happiness that makes a noise. It announces its arrival with a deep inhale and a deep exhale. That happiness. You know that happiness, right? That happiness is success because it turns out happy people get jobs. Happy people create. Happy people win. Happy people fall in love and raise families, they lead and change the world. Happy people get what they want because often happy people are the ones who realized they don’t actually need much more than they already have and they appreciate what they’ve got. Happy people are contagious.
I see people stressing all the time, about this, about that, and about problems in their life. And I’m here to just keep it real and say, your problems are so important, but really they’re not important at all. And let me explain. Something might be bothering you right now, and that’s totally cool. It is important in your life and no one else will understand it, that’s fine. But, baby, look around. Life is waiting for you to live it. So go ahead smile, be happy, make a new friend, take a trip, treat yourself. Get up, randomly dance right now. So be happy because I promise you, as important as your problems are, they ar not nearly as important as all the good things you got going on.
I had a dream to come to Barcelona. But afterwards, I’m thinking maybe you should keep your dream instead of making it come true. Because that dream could almost, not almost, could have, not destroy me, but make it difficult for me. And the first six months, fantastic, I had a fantastic time. I had a very good relationship with Guardiola. I wanted to learn the Barcelona, the way of playing. It felt good the first six months, after that something happened that I still don’t have answers for.
Which maybe I will never know. I mean, if somebody has a problem with me, should come to me and we resolve it, whatever the problem is, like a man. Because it was ridiculous, you don’t talk to the player. The player is looking for answers. At that moment I was not happy. And I said, I have to choose. Either I stay, win everything, but I will not be happy. Or I go to somewhere else. And that is what happened. I went to Milan, my jersey came back for playing football. I did a good job, I won the Scudetto immediately. I won the Super Cup, and everybody was happy, and they were appreciating me for playing there.
I like to stay happy. And I like to live life light, and make the best of life. And I think that when you carry a certain kind of energy, or if you have a funky energy that you hold on within yourself, you just can’t grow, and you can’t really move how you need to. So for me, I just like to be happy and cool with pretty much everybody. And that’s just pretty much it.

What is the way to be happy? By sharing happiness. When you spread happiness, it grows. When you don’t spread it, to hold on to yourself, it dwindles, dwindles, dwindles, and then finishes. This is what people don’t know. They want to be happy, well, they don’t know how to share with everybody, how to expand one’s family.
