Good morning, Believe nation!
Today’s message is do what you love. Over to you, Ridley Scott.
So many people in life take up occupations they don’t really want or they don’t really like, but it becomes what their life is. They can’t get off this merry-go-round because they have to work, they’ve got to earn money, et cetera, et cetera.
“I knew early on what I wanted to do and therefore was able to follow that route and I was not terribly good at academics.” – Ridley Scott
Very few people really enjoy what they do in life I think, I’ve discovered, right. I’m one of the lucky ones. I knew early on what I wanted to do and therefore was able to follow that route and I was not terribly good at academics. I was good at metalwork, woodwork, and arts.
Evan: If you don’t know what you love to do, then stop settling for what’s in front of you. Stop settling for what’s easy, stop settling for what’s comfortable, stop settling for what’s close. That’s what most people do. Most people settle for what’s in front of them because it’s the easy thing to do, because pushing out and trying something new is hard, is painful, is stretching comfort zones, and I want to go out and do that.
So you settle and you build an entire life settling. If you look at the people who have had the most success in any field, whoever you look up to, whether it’s an entrepreneur, a musician or a singer, or a director, whoever it is. There’s somebody that you look up to. The people who have had success in every field, that are at the top, they love what they do. It’s one of the most consistent themes on this channel.

It’s why I started expanding beyond just entrepreneurs. When I started this channel, it was only for entrepreneurs. The people we profiled were only entrepreneurs. I think the first person that we did that was not an entrepreneur was Michael Jordan. I thought, well, he’s more of an athlete than he is an entrepreneur. I’m sure he’s done some business ventures, but he’s mostly known as being an athlete.
Then, I tasked my team with, “Okay, let’s try creating one and see what comes up.” All of the rules that we found that Michael Jordan apply to everything. They apply to life. Okay, yes, we’re not taking his advice on how to do a free throw or do a jump shot or dunk over somebody, but all of the advice around preparation and hard work and mindset, mentality, teamwork, leadership, all of this stuff is applicable to everybody.
It’s applicable to entrepreneurs. If you look across any of these guys and girls, they love what they do, all of them. You can never have massive success at anything unless you love what you do which is why those really popular articles about the 10 best businesses to start this year, those always do well ’cause it’s an easy, short-term fix and you think, “Oh, I just need to go and start that company.” But if you don’t have the passion for it, you’re never going to take it anywhere.
Look at this, look at what I do. Look at my business as an example. Look at the YouTube channel. One of the top ten things to do next year for business is to start a YouTube channel. You say, “Great, I want “to make entrepreneur videos as well.” I love what I do. There are a lot’s of other people doing similar things in the industry and they love what they do. GaryVee loves what he does.
“You can never have massive success at anything unless you love what you do” – Evan Carmichael
To come in and compete against us, you better love what you do. You’ll find your own niche and you’ll find your own way to stand out, but if you don’t, you’re going to get crushed. You’re going to always have a mediocre business because there’s always going to be people in your industry who will love what they do and those are the people who have success.
So look at what you’re doing. Look at the business you’re in. Do you love it? Do you have the emotion for it? Are you researching? Are you studying? Are you trying to get better? Are you trying to grow or are you just lookin’ to make a quick buck? If all you’re tryin’ to do is make money from it, you’re never going to make any. You might make a little bit, but you’re never going to reach your potential.
“Say yes to things, try new things, explore until you find the thing that makes you want to come alive.” – Evan Carmichael
You’re never going to do the thing that only you can do that you can have a huge impact on and make a ton of money with. Until you find what you love to do. If you don’t know what you love to do, then stop settling for what’s in front of you and go out and explore. Say yes to things, try new things, explore until you find the thing that makes you want to come alive. Then, go do that again and again and again and again and again.
So the question of the day today is what do you love to do?
What’s the thing that if you could do all day long, that’s where you would focus your time? You can wake up in the morning and then look at the clock and it’s already evening and you’re like where did the time go ’cause you spent so much time on the thing that you love? What is that thing? Tell me what that is. Leave it in the comments below and we’ll join in the discussion.
I also want to give a quick shout out to Edwin Aristor. Thank you so much for picking up a copy of my book, Your One Word. I really, really, really appreciate the support and hope you’re enjoying the book.
Thank you guys so much for watching. I believe in you. I hope you continue to believe in yourself and whatever your one word is. Much love and I’ll see you again tomorrow morning for another shot of entspresso.
