Goals Based Strategic Planning - Part IV (Strategic and Tactical)

In order to understand strategic planning, we must first try to identify what is strategic and what is tactical. Also, notice that said:

Strategic “AND” Tactical

---NOT---

Strategic “VERSUS” tactical

Some of you are probably wondering why?

Let me tell you.

I believe that both strategic and tactical plans are equally critical to an organizations success or failure. Most successful leaders that I have met seem to have the following trait in common. They understand and utilize strategic planning to chart the course for their organization.

However, they also understand that the tactical day-to-day operations of the organization, if executed properly, make achieving the overriding strategy possible.

As far as defining “what is strategic” and “what is tactical” is concerned, the answer is very simple really.

At the most rudimentary level, strategic defines the "what and why" and tactical defines to the "how."

The strategic plan of an organization reflects the ability of its leaders to comprehend the big picture by taking into account patterns and trends, identifying ways to capitalize on potential opportunities, identifying means to mitigate anticipated issues and predicting outcomes.

Strategic issues deal with overriding mission and purpose of the organization by specifying why it exists, how it makes a difference, and where it plans to go in the future.

The tactical aspect refers to the day-to-day operations of the organization and defines how these activities ensure the achieving of strategic goals. Please see “operational plans” mentioned later in the book.

Having well defined strategic and tactical plans greatly increases the chances of success for any organization.
