Prevention Of Child Abuse And Neglect

Child abuse and neglect are one of the most alarming issues across the world. Its prevalence has made the authorities worried about the negative impacts it will have on the society and the world as a whole. Here are some statistics that will indicate the severity of this issue.

▪ Studies have shown that approximately 40 million children under the age of 15 are subjected to child abuse annually.

▪ Child abuse results in adolescents committing suicide, which is the third leading cause of their death.

▪ Studies conducted in many countries of the world suggest that over 80% of children undergo physical punishment with over one-third experiencing serious punishment with the use of implements.

▪ Physical violence is assisted by psychological violence. Isolation threats, emotional indifference and things like these are becoming a norm. All these forms of violence have a negative impact on children’s well-being.

▪ Studies indicate that over 36% girls and 29% boys have suffered child sexual abuse. Over 150 million girls and 73 million boys under 18 have suffered any form of sexual violence in 2002.

▪ Over 600 million children are living below the poverty line. It is, in fact, impossible to know the number of street children worldwide, although the number to be estimated is 100 million.

▪ Neglect contributes to 78% of all child abuse cases while most of the cases go unreported.

▪ The frequency of child abuse is such that child rape occurs every two minutes.

These are just a few of them. In fact, these statistics do not even portray the real picture but just a little part of it. Most of the crimes go under the blanket. Many do not have the audacity to speak it out and many do not live enough to do so. It is clear that something needs to be done in order to stop this crime. There are many organisations like Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families that are working for towards the solution. Even laws are been passed in many countries to limit the activity but its validity in terms of implementation is another different story.

The real question is ‘what can we do to prevent child abuse as parents?’ Every person can make a difference in the life of a child or struggling family. Here are some ways in which you can be part of the bigger picture:

▪ Become a foster parent. Foster parents are able to provide abused and neglected children a safe and protected environment to live which each and every human deserves. Treat them with respect, care and affection until their family conditions get improved. You can prevent them from the ongoing abuse in this manner.

▪ Donate basic items to the families in need. Many families are undergoing poverty which makes them frustrated. This makes them abuse their children. You can give them the basic essentials of life. Become their moral and financial support. Even a bit of your help would work out.

▪ Becoming a good example is another remedy. Be an amazing example to all children and families that come in contact with you. Life can be challenging at times. Set a good example for other parents and children to minimise the presence of child abuse and neglect.

▪ Encourage the children you know who are victimised by such crimes. Make them feel wanted. Make them feel important and make them feel noticed. Show them how significant their lives are to the world and the society. This will help improve their physical and psychological well-being.

It is very difficult to eliminate child abuse and neglect completely but it is every person’s responsibility to play their role.
