Consider, a person has always wanted to climb a mountain, not any mountain, mind you, but Mount Everest, first mapped in 1921. Inexperienced, but goal-oriented, the person discovers there are guided expeditions for sale that promise a picture at the 29,029-foot high summit. The cost: around $100,000 for that dream climb, picture and descent. Depending in the weather conditions it can take less than one day to several weeks to climb Mt. Everest.

Hear “inexperienced.” How can that promise possibly be made? Hear “money talks.” The inexperienced ones get yanked up by a short rope and dragged down. Payment tendered, services received…end of the story…provided everything goes well. When it does not, it can be everyone for self! Hear we are talking Mount Everest. All don’t get back down alive from a mountain known to make the most corpses out of the reckless driven.

Statistics from 2011-2012 state 3,100 climbers from over 20 countries have made 5,100 recorded climbs with 225 fatalities and 2,875 made successful climbs, some multiple times. The most recorded number of climbs is held by Apa Sherpa, who from May 10, 1990 to May 11, 2011, climbed Everest 21 times in a 21 year period. The oldest woman to reach the top was Tamae Watanabe on May 19, 2012.

Because of better equipment, 37% fatality rate in 1990 dropped to 4.4% in 2004.

Sometimes my life goals feel like Everest. Yesterday, I realized I’d moved into reckless, driving for the top. Today, I take a big breath, still on the climb, still not at the summit, but more in touch with knowing “when to hold, when to fold and when to walk away” from obstacles on my way up.

Fifty years of climbing, I see the summit in my mind’s eye. Who will be there to take my picture?
