The Importance of Increasing your Personal Impact

Whatever we do – we are always making an impact. Other people observe us, listen to us and make Judgments about us and we about them.

Personal impact is vital in all areas our life, personal and business- the way we come across to others not only affects how successful we are or what type of relationships we build, but also and maybe even more importantly it determines how we feel about ourselves and what kind of world we help to shape. Impact equals Power; How can you increase yours?

The first important question you may want to ask yourself is - Are you making the Impact you would like to make? Ask some of your friends and colleagues to give you some feedback. Ask them how they perceive you. You may be surprised by what you will hear.

Impact is linked to the ability to make shifts happen, to influence others. Impact is related to self-esteem and confidence. The freer we feel, the more natural and charismatic we become and our Impact increases.

This type of Freedom comes from connecting to our Personal Power. It provides us with the ability to master our fate by choosing to lead and direct our life from the inside-out. WE are the key to the Impact we have.

Of course this Impact, this Power can be used in a positive or in a negative way. Throughout history and in our daily lives we have seen many examples of this.

This is why it is very important for each of us to decide WHAT kind of IMPACT we want to have. And one of the most effective ways to gain some clarity is by starting to look at our values. Which ones are most important to us?

1. Choosing your Value System

What do I mean by values? – Honesty, respectfulness, kindness, non-violence, loyalty, fairness, are all human values that most of us would like to experience more often. I say: lets become what we want to see and create. The first step starts with us...

Our value system is our compass by which we move and behave; while people and circumstances may influence us, our choices must be based on the set of principles that we live by. What is your set of principles that you will stick to, that will help you be centered regardless of other people’s actions?

Some months ago I asked myself this question. I decided then that I would not knowingly lie. That this would be the one value I would stick to whatever happens. Immediately I felt stronger. I suddenly knew that regardless of what other people around me would do, regardless of the fact that they may lie or cheat me…I would uphold this value.

And that takes me to the next important step

2. Taking Responsibility

…For everything we do and for everything we don’t do – Responsibility equals IMPACT. Impact – Responsibility – Power generate each other. Yes, take responsibility for everything.

Why is this so important? Because when we don’t take full Responsibility we start COMPLAINING and BLAMING and that leaves us feeling POWERLESS. Just look at the recent events here in Greece – everyone is blaming everyone – no one is taking responsibility – hence people are feeling powerless and frustrated which leads to VIOLENCE and more bad decisions – Lets BE DIFFERENT and BREAK OUT from this vicious circle.

Two thousand five hundred years ago Lao Tzu, the famous Chinese philosopher, said that the biggest problem in the world was that individuals experienced themselves as Powerless. Today this is still our biggest problem.

Lao Tzu believed that when people do not have a sense of power they become resentful and uncooperative. Individuals who do not feel personal power feel fear and this type of FEAR is the source of VIOLENCE.

The moment we take full responsibility we become enormously empowered. We stop blaming others. Instead we acknowledge the situation or person as it is and then take appropriate action. We find new solutions. Our Impact will touch and inspire the people around us and we will have the energy to achieve more.

In this way we can make a difference – each one of us, every day. By choosing our values carefully and taking responsibility we can change our world – step by step.

And if you are still doubtful then just imagine the alternative...
