The Importance of Technology in Education

The development of technology and education goes hand in hand. Well, this would be certainly true if we ignore the major discoveries like fire, wheel and agriculture etc. But with the development of writing and study, we evolved from cave dwelling primates to the cultured species that we are, as of today.

Several technological advancements wouldn’t have been possible without the ability to record and study data. But, as we live in the 21st century, technology has advanced to unforeseen heights and to an extent that it is now facilitating better comprehensibility and easy learning to various study groups. Since ancient times, the development of specialized tools facilitated better study and measuring of scientific, mathematical, astronomical and geological data.

Hence, we can safely assume the symbiotic relationship between education and technology. Technology has not only made learning easier but also made us aware about future gadget news and other modern happenings in the world. Listed below are some of best ways how technological advancements are improving the educational quality and comprehensibility.

1. Video Enabled Classrooms

The concept of using videos for learning and teaching across various institutions has become extremely popular around the globe. The videos not only provide a much better and visual mode of learning as compared to the books but also help impart a practical understanding.

While it is often debated that books are better than videos, we all know that watching a phenomenon in action rather than reading about it provides a better practical knowledge. The ability to store video lessons and later watch it for reference also helps the students complete their assignments. The use of video in education not only helps the students understand better, but also helps the teachers to explain better.

2. E books

While books carry a more aesthetic value, the same cannot be said for the heavy text books. There are innumerable reasons why eBooks are better than text books. Ebooks can not only be stored in a smaller space but also eliminate the need to carry those bulky textbooks each day. With the use of Smartphones and tablets, eBook can be easily read on the go and provide much better quality of reading with adjustable text size.

With their integration with online or installed dictionaries, one can easily understand text and also add new words to their vocabulary. Ebooks can also be read in darkness without an external light source making them the perfect replacement for your textbooks.

3. Educational Simulations

With the advancements in technology, most educational institutes focus on imparting a practical knowledge rather than a theoretical one. While videos can help the students understand the working of an internal combustion engine, they would never be sure about the power generated till they drive a car. While it won’t be possible to allow the students to drive cars around the school, virtual-reality based training simulations are helping them learn in a real-time environment.

Learning through simulations has already been applied in various educational fields such as Space research and exploration, defense, medicine and science and Police training etc. Several collages and secondary educational institutes have also started providing virtual reality training to help the students have a better learning experience and knowledge.

4. Computer Managed Learning

Another debated topic is the replacement of humans as tutors in school. While there are several things that can and should only be taught by humans, several schools are using computer assisted learning to teach technical subjects such as Math and Physics. Computer managed programs assess the students based on their performance and provides them with the material they need.

This not only makes the students thorough with the basic concepts but also helps them learn at their own pace. Computer Managed Learning or CML provides a comprehensive environment where students can assess their own progress and self-evaluate their weaknesses, helping them learn better.

5. Better Instructional Design

The quality of education and comprehensibility of the students, all depend on the quality of instructions being provided. This means that the way the teacher explains a certain phenomenon makes a major impact on the student’s understanding.

This calls for a much improved and standardized instructional design that is easy for all types of students. The use of technological learning and teaching aids such as videos, eBooks, computers and virtual reality training, all seek to provide a much better instructional design.

These educational trends are not only improving the quality of education but are also helping build a better future. The use of technology in providing education might still be a debatable topic, but with the above examples, it is certainly clear that the future of both education and technology is a bright one indeed.

A traveller by day and reader by night' is how I would sum up my life. My wanderlust led me to quit my cushy job at 28 and finally embark on a journey around the world. Since then, I have lived in many countries and soaked in as many books as possible during my travel journeys. Among them, the "Book of Mirdad" is still my personal favourite and holds a special place in my heart. My progression towards writing was inevitable and happened quite naturally. I have been writing for a few years now an...
