How an enterprise transition plan supports technology change

Enterprise Architecture is a discipline which is not easily understood because of the different connections that this information technology service has with other major business functions. One of the biggest benefits of having an enterprise architecture program is the ability for the organization to better manage the changes in their business. An important deliverable that the enterprise architecture team develops is the enterprise transition plan. The enterprise transition planis considered to be one of the foundational documents that support an enterprise architecture program.

The enterprise transition plan documents the:

1. Current system environment of the organization (A)

2. Target environment of the organization (B)

3. Transition from the current environment to the target environment (A to B)

There are very few organizations that have been effectively been able to capture this information and share this information with the appropriate stakeholders. Having a transition plan creates the corporate visibility which is needed to better manage changes in the technology. Technology is always changing based on new corporate innovations and new business needs. When an organization better strategize in how they will remove their legacy systems from their architecture, introduce new systems into their architecture, and how to get there is an important function of the enterprise transition plan. The transition plan also has a sequencing plan on when technologies are going to be implemented in an organization. The system dependences will also be documented. For example, you cannot implement system B without having System A installed first.

CIOs and Chief Architects need to make sure that all new technologies that are being introduced to the company have to be in the transition plan. The transition plan documents the architecture of the business and if the technology is not in the plan then the product should not be allowed into the architecture.
