3 Benefits Reusable Grocery Bags Have over Plastic Bags

You’re most likely familiar with the campaign to stick to reusable products, in order to “save our planet,” and you’re probably already using reusable bags instead of plastic bags, but not really sure exactly how your action is saving the planet or why reusable bags matter at all. Then this article is for you.

In this article, I won’t just be preaching “reusable” from the general angle, but will be showing you the benefits reusable products, specifically grocery bags, offer over their plastic counterpart.

Without much ado, here are 3 benefits reusable grocery bags have over plastic bags:

1. Reusable bags help relieve overfilled landfill sites

An estimated 6 billion plastic bags are consumed in each country every year, according to is foundation.com, but unfortunately, plastic bags that are dumped in landfills can take up to 1,000 years to decompose through a photo-degrading process that eventually contaminates soil and water.

Some estimates suggest that purchasing a single set of reusable shopping bags and using them every time you go shopping could eliminate the disposal of as many as 20,000 disposable plastic bags.

A shift from the use of plastic bags to using reusable grocery bags for shopping will obviously reduce the amount of plastic bags consumed in the world, and in essence, reduce the amount of plastic bags that will be dumped in these landfills. This is how our environment gradually gets saved.

2. Reusable bags are more recycled than plastic bags

Plastic bags are rarely recycled. Only 1% of plastic bags are being recycled in the United States, while the rest end up within the environment, especially in landfills and the ocean.

Most recycling facilities avoid plastic bags because the cost of recycling them outweighs their value. They’d rather throw them out with the trash.

Reusable bags on the other hand firstly enjoy a lot of uses as they can last for years, secondly they can be used for other things than carrying groceries when they become weak, and finally, they are more accepted by recycling centers than plastic bags.

So, when next you think of ordering for grocery bags for your store customers, just think “reusable.” You can easily order cheap wholesale grocery bags online, and you’ll get them delivered to you in no time.

3. Reusable bags save both plants and animals

Making plastic bags lead to the burning of fossil fuels and the cutting down of trees, thereby destroying our environment more.

It takes 12 million barrels of oil to produce the estimated 100 billion plastic bags Americans use each year, and it’s been stated, in a HuffingtonPost article, that the petroleum used for producing 14 plastic bags can drive a car for one mile.

Add to these the millions of birds and sea animals that die yearly from polluted water or from directly ingesting floating plastic – or from being trapped and drowned by plastic waste, and you’d agree plastic bags should be a thing of the past.

The more reusable bags are used, the less our planet is destroyed this way, and our flora and fauna can flourish as they ought to.

If stores around you are still offering plastic bags for free, it doesn’t mean you have to take it. Buy a reusable bag – which you can use over and over again – if you have to. Remember, the cost of producing and acquiring these dangerous materials is nothing compared to the price we all pay for the continued existence of plastic bags in the world.
