3 Little-Known Addictions That Can Ruin Your Business Fast

When you hear the word "addiction", chances are what comes to your mind is that same old commonplace definition -- a chronic persistent urge to continue doing something despite the harmful consequences. And when you think of addictive behavior, things like drugs, alcohol, smoking and gambling pop into your head.

Well, the truth is, there are many other addictions you probably don't know about aside the common ones. And interestingly, those little-known addictions can be equally as dangerous, especially because they're not widely regarded as such -- yet they interfere with people’s daily activities and relationships.

Here are three of those little-known addictions that can ruin your business very quickly if you allow them.

1. Caffeine addiction

Just so you know, caffeine is the most consumed psychoactive drug -- yes, drug -- in the world. It's commonly taken in the form of tea, coffee, and energy drinks. While it's been proven to have a number of health benefits when taken in moderation, it can be a real productivity killer and threat to life when taken too frequently, especially in dangerous amounts.

When you or your employees become addicted to caffeine, the result is irritability, anxiety, high blood pressure, jitters, lethargy, frequent coffee breaks, and many other adverse effects. Of course, only few things can kill a business faster than the dwindling productivity that usually results from these adverse effects.

2. Smartphone addiction

With the multiple benefits of the smartphone revolution comes one major downside -- smartphone addiction. Most smartphone users check their phone first thing after waking up in the morning and last thing at night before going to bed. They spend long hours staring at their phones, and feel compelled to use it while doing other important things. In fact, most people now have their lives being controlled by their smartphone and they can't survive 15 minutes without it. Worse, this isn't widely seen as a problem.

By constantly staring at your smartphones all day, you and your employees will waste lots of hours meant for more important things, trivialize important assignments, procrastinate repeatedly, and achieve little or none of your personal, career, and business goals.

3. Credit card addiction

A credit card provides quick access to cash when you need to quickly buy something you can't afford at the moment. And it can be a really cool tool if used with discipline. But for some people, life without their credit card is just plain impossible. And when they have it with them, they always have the irresistible urge to "burn some cash" by making impulsive purchases.

Remember, a credit card is a type of loan. And the more heavily you use it, the deeper you go down the abyss of debt. And if you pile up too much debt, your business suffers directly or indirectly.

As a business owner, you need to check yourself and your employees for signs of these dangerous addictions. And if you detect the signs, take immediate steps to help the affected individual in controlling them. Otherwise, you'd be placing your business on a time bomb.
