5 Options for Immigrating to the United States

The United States of America is seen by many as a fertile land that is full of opportunities. Many people wish to immigrate to the United States but find it very hard due to the immigration processes. Most times they just aren't able to meet the tough requirements.

However, according to a 2016 survey, 84.3 million immigrants and their US-born children are living in the US, so it is not entirely impossible to immigrate. Regardless of the reason you're trying to immigrate, whether it may be to start a new life, be with your family, or explore better business opportunities, here are 5 ways to immigrate to the USA.

1. Family Immigration

This process usually involves the use of a US citizen or a permanent resident family member (one you're closely related with) to submit a petition to the USCIS to immigrate. To make your immigration easier, you'll be better off going through a spouse who is a US citizen or parents who are US citizens (if you're under 21).

2. Employment-Based Immigration

Another way you can immigrate is to secure employment from a company in the US. The H1B visa program allows a US company to hire foreign professional workers for a specific period of time, which could extend up to six years. To qualify for this immigration route, your job must fall under a specific category, including accounting, marketing, education, IT, scientific research, business, and the list goes on.

You can use the H1B visa to immigrate to the US, because it is a dual intent visa which means you can also apply for permanent residency during the time that you're working as an employee at the US company that hired you. Also, through this route, your family can also come live with you in the US, although they will not be working unless their work visa is obtained. You can speak to an H1B attorney to learn more or get started.

3. Investor-Based Immigration

This immigration route involves investing a specific amount of money (starting from $500,000) into commercial enterprises that are linked with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approved regional centres. This investment will be used to create employment opportunities for US workers, thereby promoting the US economy. Additionally, you have to provide evidence that the money is from a legitimate source and will bring no harm to the cause. If you're successful, you can then apply for permanent residence.

4. Asylum

This is a great way of immigrating to the US if you have suffered fear or persecution due to your religion, race, nationality or political opinion. To apply forasylum, you have to be present in the US. Your application must be done within a year of your arrival into the United States, and you must be eligible. Members of your family can be included in this as well.

5. Visa Lottery Program

Through the diversity visa lottery program which is widely known asthe green card lottery, you can qualify for permanent residency in the US, although you have to be emigrating from a country with a low immigration rate to the US.

There are lots of other ways you can immigrate to the USA, but most of them are more complicated. Select one from the five ways discussed here, and be on your way to living the American Dream.
