How to Make Money as a Commercial Driver

Times are tough, jobs seem scarce, and those who have them are losing them faster than they can think. To be on the safer side, you’re looking for a better way to make some extra cash. You’ve looked everywhere but it seems no one is hiring at the moment.

Then it suddenly hits you, that perfect idea that never before crossed your mind. “Why not just apply as commercial driver for one of these companies?” you ask yourself. “It can’t be harder than just driving their commercial motor vehicles to various destinations,” right?

Actually, it is. There are a whole lot of things involved in becoming a commercial driver. But first, let's see who a commercial driver is.

A commercial driver, according to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, is a person who either volunteers or is paid to operate commercial motor vehicles.

But these commercial drivers don’t just go about driving trucks and all. Before you can become a commercial driver, you need to obtain a commercial driver’s license. It’s just like the normal driver’s license you have for your car, but in this case, it is a license to drive the heavier vehicles.

To get a commercial driver’s license, one of the requirements that must be met is the age requirement. If you’ll only be driving within your state of residence, you’re required to be at least 18 years of age. But if you’ll be engaging in trips across different states, you’ll have to be at least 21 years of age to acquire a commercial driver’s license.

There’s also the vision test and the test of your knowledge of driving regulations to pass.

Now that you know some of the steps to become a commercial driver, how can you make money after becoming one? When you finally get your license, is there a way you can use it to make some extra cash?

Yes there is! One of those ways is to pursue a career in commercial driving, particularly in the trucking industry. Let me show you some of the benefits you stand to gain:

1. A huge amount of job opening.

According to CNN, as of 2012, there were as many as 200,000 job openings in the United States of America alone. The U.S Bureau of Labour expects trucking to add 330,100 jobs between 2010 and 2020. Can you see the massive opportunities? With a commercial driver’s license, you become highly-sought after in the trucking industry.

2. A very attractive pay package.

There’ll be no point chasing all those job openings if the pay attached to them is miserable. But that’s not the case in the trucking industry. You see, most businesses need to transport their goods to the consumers. To do this, they need truck drivers with licenses to help them out. Since there are not so many drivers around, the available ones become precious commodity that most businesses will want to lure with high pay. According to the Labour Department, the average salary for truck drivers in America is around $40,000 per annum. Certainly not bad for a career in truck driving.

Those are some of the ways through which you can make money as commercial driver. If you’re game, go get your license immediately. Jobs await!
