Ooooh! Another Bright Shiny Object!

If you are someone who has a business, you can be, rather you ARE, inundated with mail, email, Facebook and Twitter announcements, etc. about the "best," the "newest," and the "be-all-end-all" programs that will answer all your business needs. Think you need leads for your business? There are countless businesses that will pretty much promise you that their leads will get you customers or business partners.

Think you need video on your website? [You do.] Yes - there are many businesses that may appeal to you to do your video making for you. Or try to sell you the latest camera or program to make that video yourself.

Don't know what to do to generate traffic to your website? Again - yes- there are countless programs that tell you how to attract/get/keep traffic.

Have no idea what to do? Or what to do next? You got it - there are businesses that will give you step-by-step information or guides as to what to do and in what order.

There is nothing inherently "wrong" with looking for any of the above listed types of help for your business. Many of the pitches you get are legitimate and from well-respected people.

They are trying to sell you their way of doing something - and one of these may just be THE perfect fit for you!

So what is the problem? The problem is what some call the bright shiny object syndrome. Most buyers of these types of programs never implement the whole program or fail to stick with it for very long before they start to look at the next program [the newest bright shiny object.]

How many of us have unopened books or un-heard CDs in our offices or homes? The ones we were so sure would be useful when we bought them?

Or how many bought a "get traffic" program and then when it did not work as quickly as we had hoped - we totally stopped using it?

It seems to be built into our psyche that these shiny objects attract us. As babies we loved to watch objects moving around and we gazed in awe at shiny objects. As older children, we tried to gab that shiny ring on the carousel and if we got it - well - we tried for a second one!

But we are now adults, and adults with businesses. We need to learn to better differentiate what we need from what looks so shiny!

We need to fully implement the program we just bought and stick with it.

And - we need to put on blinders to avoid that next shiny object.

Starting life as a New Yorker I moved away for graduate school but still think of someday returning "home."  But I now live in a house that floats on the Columbia River and am loving Oregon - hence a fun dilemma.
