Twitter is a widely-used and important social media tool for law firms.

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, Twitter is an incredibly popular social media tool. Most businesses have jumped on the bandwagon, though some are still holding out. And while the skeptics think Twitter is just for celebrities and teenagers, the reality is that your clients are already using it, so you should be too. Still not convinced? Well here are 7 reasons your law firm should use Twitter.

  1. Networking. You would be surprised at who you can meet on Twitter. Like I said, most of your clients – and prospects – are already on Twitter. Follow them and try to get them to follow you and your firm.
  2. Experience. Showcase your experience and your legal knowledge by retweeting interesting law articles and your opinion on certain legal issues. It’s also a great place for you to share articles you’ve written or blog posts as well.
  3. Marketing. Twitter is also a good marketing tool, since you can use it to drive people to your website and blog.
  4. Personal. Twitter is a great way to connect to your clients on a personal level. And even if you are tweeting for your firm, don’t use your law firm’s logo as your Twitter picture; use your photo. You want people to know that they are talking to a real person and not just some generic corporate identity.
  5. Real time news. Instead of waiting for the 5 o’clock news, just sign onto Twitter to get the latest breaking news. Twitter is great at getting news out fast – right when it happens. So if nothing else, use Twitter for this benefit.
  6. Spread the word. Twitter isn’t just a way to get the latest news, but you can deliver important facts this way too. If you want to quickly communicate something important — tweet it.
  7. Spying. Follow your competition, and use the information they post to give you a competitive advantage.
Twitter is easy to use, and contrary to what the naysayers say, easy to keep up with. It doesn’t take much time to post a few things a day to your loyal legal readers, and you will be reaping the benefits in no time. The important thing to remember is to get on it at least every other day. You don’t want to let your Twitter account go to waste or disappoint your followers!
