Here are a few facts about Oprah Winfrey that a lot of people do not know. The pontiff of daytime TV, publishing and media in general is an open book more or less. She leads by example and her life story is a testament to determination and overcoming the odds.

Oprah was born girl on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi and was named Orpah Gail Winfrey. Her name was mispronounced as “Oprah” so many times and misspelled as such that eventually it stuck. The name "Orpah" remained on her birth certificate, but she eventually became known as "Oprah”.

Oprah was raised monetarily poor, however her father demanded that she read one book a week and write an essay on that book. It was this type of discipline established early in life than enabled her to be as successful as she has been.

Another on the little known facts about Oprah Winfrey is that not only is she in the top 100 richest people in the world, she is also the only African-American billionaire in the world. Her assets grow on an average of 250 million USD a year. This is in spite of being one of the most prolific philanthropists in the world.

Oprah Winfrey is a she's a co-founder of the cable TV network known as "Oxygen", or "Oh!" for short. The twenty-four hour channel is geared towards women. It was created in 1998 and it now reaches nearly 70 million American households. Oprah’s quest to improve the lives of women is not just geared towards entertaining them either. She has founded a program to build schools for girls and young women in South Africa and championed causes to improve education and health in woman all over the world.

Facts about Oprah Winfrey in relation to charity and helping her fellow human beings does not end there either. Oprah launched the Angels network in 1997. This huge charitable organization covers every aspect of helping people in need out. From building to homes, to establish scholarships and even building schools overseas, Oprah’s Angel Network makes an impact with over 50 separate programs begin ran worldwide.

Really, all the facts about Oprah are out there and readily available, the hardest thing for me was simply coming up with new facts or “cracking the nut” as they say and shocking or amazing you into saying something like ‘WOW, I did not know that!’ The problem with this is that Oprah is a master at leading through example. Without a back story and something that makes her human, Oprah is just another billionaire philanthropist (not that that’s a bad thing).

The bare boned facts about Oprah Winfrey, the ones that really count are; she’s human, she’s had to overcome great obstacles, but most of all she’s one of us. This person of humble beginnings has more star power than anyone else of her generation, but you’d still have her over for coffee. By opening her life, her past and her dreams of the future to us all she has provided leadership to a couple of generations and remained an example of what one can accomplish to us all.
