Barbara Lang - Starting The Business
You know how it is. Although I obtained a Bachelor degree in Psychology from York University, and fully intended to pursue a career in that domain, I paid my way through school by working as an administrative assistant for a Finance Company and subsequently became an executive assistant. Eighteen years later, I had gained a vast amount of knowledge by moving around to various departments within the company. I started in Collections and moved through the Bad Debt Dept, Human Resources, Business Development, Marketing, Clients Sales Development and the IT Dept. Using a basic set of software, communications and business skills, I acquired new and more specific skills as I moved between the departments supporting Sr. Directors and VP's. In 2000, I happened to be assigned to a particularly difficult boss and my growing unhappiness (not to mention the volatility of job security as corporations everywhere restructured and downsized), planted the entrepreneurial seed. By that time, I had a 5 year old child with a health issues and I was looking for an opportunity to work from home to be more available to his needs.
I happened to pick up a book from the library called "101 Internet Businesses You can Start from Home" by Susan Sweeney. That's where I first came upon the term "Virtual Assistant" and I was hooked! While remaining corporately employed, I spent the next 2 years researching the industry, preparing my marketing and business plans, taking business and software courses, (saving for and) purchasing the hardware and equipment I needed to make a serious go of it and marketing my new profession to anyone who would stand still long enough to listen. In 2002, I registered my company, set up my website and hit the networking circuit. By October 2002, I had 3 part time clients and by the end of that year, I handed my resignation in to my boss and dove into the entrepreneurial life full time. I have counted my blessings every day since then. Despite the obvious challenges that come with being self employed, I have never once considered returning to the corporate life. I have finally gone from having a "job" to finding a "career"! Would you like to be profiled? Click on the Get Profiled! button at the top right part of the page to contact us.
