Kris Schantz - Growing Up

As a young kid I ran a paper route and started various 'businesses' - lemonade stands (key lessons: pick a good location and hope for hot weather), odd jobs (advertising is easy, getting sales isn't) and t-shirt silk screening (make sure your customers will buy what you're making). During high school I was heavily involved in Junior Achievement's Company Program, a great test kitchen for all the business recipes I could dream up.

While none of my close family or friends owned businesses, my parents created an environment at home where I was allowed to make my own decisions (most of the time, at least - as long as I ate all my vegetables) and then take responsibility for the outcome, whether good or bad. This gave me the freedom to make my own mistakes and taught me to live with them. They also taught me to make the most of what you've got.
